funny you should say that cos all pajero autos have gearoil and oil coolers behind the grill as standard, bit expensive to change the oil though.

i can buy the 3.2 letres of oil for about 12 quid and its only 10 bolts to change the oil in the box so i would recommend you try and change it yourselves.

oh and btw teh the oh you paid to get it done then you can buy some more beers with the excess cash in your as* pocket

I would most definately have an extra cooler fitted. Most automatic transmissions have a cooler already, this is a simple pipe in the main radiator which does a good job for the purpose when solo but when the vehicle is working hard a lot more heat is generated in the torque convertor and a seperate cooler, mounted low down in the airflow is really a must.

When using an auto with a low powered car like mine you really do need to manually select the gears to suite the conditions, dont just rely on the change speed selected by the vehicle electronics, or mechanical governor in the case of older vehicles.

Hope this of of help. trust me, I am a car doctor!

I have towed all over the country with my 2.8 Pajero Automatic without an additional oil cooler fitted and not encountered any problems.

For all questions related to the Pajero the best place to go is http://www.pocuk.com/forums/ here you will find the answers to all of your questions plus a lot more.

Are you sure you need one? I would certainly check with your dealer before spending good money on an upgrade that seems to be rarely required. We asked our Vauxhall dealer about this when we bought our first automatic Omega and were assured that no additional cooling was required. We are now on our third, and have never had the least problem (touch wood, fingers crossed). We must have towed with these vehicles for at least 15,000 miles across Europe, so any possible glitch has been very slow to emerge!

we've just returned from an 1800 mile tour of north germany and france with 3adults and four kids in our automatic isuzu bighorn towing an abbey stafford five berth and had no problems at all. the other alternative to an oil cooler is to change the gearbox oil to an oil with a higher temperature range. auto gearboxes are quite tough, it's the oil that breaks down at high temperatures

Do you need an oil cooler??  I would STRONGLY recommend it.  My Vauxhall dealer had told me that I didn't need an oil cooler before my £2000 breakdown???!!! (see my previous post)   The large Vx dealerership in Glasgow did not have the expertise to repair my gearbox but sent it to Mackie.  How reliable is the dealers' advice.  Do they really understand about towing - in my experienc NO!!!

Mackiee of Glasgow who repaired the gearbox, and fitted the oil cooler, strongly recommended having it fitted, Atherton transmissions who checked the fluid, as per Mackie's warranty 6 months later thought it a good idea and Selector gearboxes who recen tly changed the transmission oil on the 4 year schedule too said it was a good idea.

It true to say that I was probably unfortunate.  The seal on my gearbox failed after I had been towing my large 'van on the motorway for over 150 miles. If that seal had not failed the gearbox would not have lost its oil and been badly damaged.  But a  very important factor in seal failing was because the oil was very hot.  There is a very good chance if I had had the oil cooler fitted at that time the oil would have been cooler and the seal not failed.  Who knows for sure???  Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

If I had had a cooler fitted before my BREAKDOWN,  and it had prevented it, that cost of less than £100, for the cooler, would have saved me a £2000 repair bill, a week's lost holiday and a LOT of stress and worry.  Again who knows???

What is certain is that

(1)  3 gearbox experts, only one of whom stood to gain by their advice, have advised it

(2)  I have had over 60000 miles of gearbox problem-free motoring since the cooler was fitted.  This has included a long distance towing on Continental motorways at the higher speeds allowed there.

As with most things "you takes your choice and pays your money" or not as you wish.  I know that I would be VERY UNLIKELY to tow with an automatic without having an oil box cooler fitted.  IMHO a lot of reassurance for a, relatively, low cost.

If anyone does want technical advice I would advise then to find a local gearbox specialist and get their advice.

Regards

Tim

Littlejack 40

I am surprised that Kenlow dont do a cooler, I would talk to your dealer for confirmation about the need for a cooler on your car.

My car suffered a major auto box failure this year, It cost me more than two thousand quid to fix and I had a cooler!

Since my last post I have lost confidance in the Merc and have exchanged it for a Ford Explorer, manual!

My car had covered only 68,000 miles and it has cost me a small fortune to keep on the road. I'm afraid that Mercedes has lost me as customer for ever.

Now I just dont care how many miles per gallon I get, at least the vehicle will be reliable.
