It'll be your stabiliser groaning if you're using the blade type. I took mine apart & cleaned it up. Watch how it comes apart as you do it though, some components may have to go in a certain way. I found the surface of the friction pads in it to be quite dusty. There is a kit available to service them & I believe a stabiliser clinic too. The way I see it is that as long as it's groaning it's got resistance so must be working. Clean it by all means but don't lubricate it though.
