have a look at www.nissan-navara.net/forum.  there are issues with d22 navara.the big end bearings were made from alumnium not strong enough for this engine.there is a mod replace bearings with lead/copper ones and arp bolts.mine has been done some 14000 miles no prob.nissan have now offered help with this issue.

I'm a member of the www.nissan-navara.net forum and I'm an owner of a 56plate double cab outlaw.

The older models did have some conrod issues, and replacement bearing does the trick with them. The early D40 models, 2005 on, had a few probs with rear axle and clutches, but thats been sorted out from mid 2006.

There is a recall on the airbag, the software needs flashing with an updated program. Its done for free by the dealers and takes around 15mins.

For me, its a brilliant vehicle that has never let me down, though I can't help thinking that by saying it I've now jinxed myself!!!

For a tow vehicle is has been fantastic, pulls just about anything you could ask of it without a problem. Seats 5 adults in reasonable comfort. Mine is not the top model (adventura) but my Outlaw model still has remote central locking, all 4 electric windows, electric & heated mirrors, power steering, cruise control, climate control, tinted windows, 6cd stereo system, auto headlights, auto windscreen wipers, front fogs, probably some other things but I can't think just now.

Cost me less than £300 fully comp isurance including business use. Road tax is £120 on my Euro4 spec. Servicing is every 18,000 miles or 24months, whichever comes first and thats about £200 every 18k or 2 years so not too bad. I've had hnearly 40mpg taking steady on a run, but normally get 28-30mpg around town. mid 30's on a good solo run or mid 20's towing.

I have a SnugTop canopy on the back which then makes it like a large estate car.

Cruised the Euro routes last year no problems, returned around 35 mpg and was not hanging around speed wise!

Taking the caravan to Austri with it soon, and really looking forward to the drive!

If you buy an earlier one make sure its had the recall's and updates done.

Chances are, if you're buying a used one with full dealer service history then its going to have been sorted out.

By a dodgy one with no service history and you are taking a chance, as with any used vehicle.

There are loads of highly satisfied D22 owners, its only the people who have had any sort of problem that seem to voice their opinions.

Read the results of an NCAP / Nissan Navara Google search, the NN is one of the worst vehicles they have ever tested...................EEK!!!!

No arguments about the results of that testing, but it was all about the timing of the airbags when operating in the event of a crash.  Only a small number were invloved (ours was one of them ) but Nissan sorted it out.  More testing has been carried out and the results posted soon.  Nissan assured us that it is all fixed.

How do you get 40 mpg !!!! I am pleased with the average since we got ours of 30mpg, but 40 would be amazing !

It was actually 39mpg as displayed on the trip computer. Very light throttle, short shifting and using over-run.  When the Nav is in over-run condition it shuts off the injectors so itsn't using fuel, so sometimes I will let my speed creep up a little then lift off the accelerator for a while.

I re-set the mpg trip after each fill up or before the start of a long journey.

High speed towing across Europe has just guzzled fuel at a rate of 20mpg but thats 'cos I was driving too fast.

Whilst in the Alps I was getting 32mpg even with the hilly conditions but after using lots to go up hill, you hardly use any going down if you make sure you're in over-run conditions. I was showing my wife how it worked, and reset the mpg trip at the top of a mountain, and by maintaining over-run all the way down the display was showing 99.9mpg as thats the max it can show. But it demonstrated to my wife how it hardly uses fuel in over-run.

I can still get 30 mpg around town driving carefully, and over that on a run. If my wife takes it to her work and back (30 ish miles each way mainly on motorways) the mpg will have jumped up by 2mpg over whatever was displayed before.

Drive it hard and it will drink hard!

Tis a great tow car though, the 3,000 miles I've just done in the past couple of weeks proved that!

PS With regards to the NCAP testing, the ratings are not comparative across the board if you read further. For example, a 5star NCAP rated Citreon wouldn't stand a chance against a  lower rated Navara as the ratings apply only to the grouping. NCAP aknowledge that higher heavier vehicles will fair better against lower lighter vehicles no matter the NCAP rating of each vehicle. Which kind of defeats the object of the NCAP rating in the first place! (unless you are only looking at the same type of vehicles and their ratings)

If any one saw the pics of a Navara that crashed through barriers and through a house, they will see that the passenger compartment was fine, the  driver walked away virtually un harmed.

I know which vehicle I'd like to be driving in an accident!

What exactly has Nissan offered help with?  Most people I have spoken to do not rate Nissans service.

Returned from 1700 mile trip around France. 24mpg which was mostly motorway driving with cruise control set at 65mph. Car never missed a beat. Very impressed. We even took our patio set complete with parasol with us, 4 bikes, awning, sunloungers and all the other polava you take in the back. I dont put much in the caravan when travelling because it all fits in the back of the car. See my gallery.
