Well done! Elgrand here you come then...... I can't see there being a problem towing most UK caravans with an Elgrand to be honest, they are massive vehicles and your average van must be, what, 1500 kg roughly?
had my jap import car nearly 5 years now, its 15 yrs old now done 89k drives like a dream and is in spanking condition, not a jot of rust anywhere, lets see how the berlingo fairs when that old. and what do you think the resale value will be on it!!!!!!!!nuff said really
------------- lifes too short to be sad
Why do Kamikaze pilots wear helmets?
All mode 4x4 ( 2wd, auto and 4wd lock, for those sticky situations towing caravans from fields etc), 3.2 turbo diesel automatic with overdrive, twin sunroofs, rear parking mirror (will be great for hitching up the caravan), twin TV's and CD player (need to fit a digital tv tuner and DVD player), 8 seats (all rear seats convert into a double bed) and dual digital climate control air con with seperate controls to front and rear.
Just to to add limo style blackout windows to the rear cabin and tow bar.
When you have so many children, you cant buy a sports car so you go for a bit of luxury All this in a 1998 S plate vehicle with no rust and 51000 miles.
Wow, what a response! Thanks guys. We did end up buying an Elgrand (can't believe I'm posting this ten months after the original post!). We've been camping a couple of times and have been to France twice already. It's a great car, just throw everything in and extremely reliable up to now. Got mind from Farm Cars/UMC in Kent, great bloke down there if you are needing a reliable Elgrand.
I picked up my Elgrand on tuesday and its much better than I expected, I drove 268 miles in sub zero temperatures and it was a great first test drive, the automatic gear change is so smooth, you dont even know you have changed gear apart from the revs changing. Got about 30mpg.
As far as towing goes, in Japan, they market small trailers for the Elgrand that have 700kg unbraked limits, there isnt a big market for caravans so there is little data about it. 700kg unbraked is quite a lot so I imagine having a braked trailer like a caravan would be no real issue for the Elgrand.
Using the 85% rule....
Kerbweight 2220kg - Towing weight 1887kg (using 85% rule and UK system) Kerbweight 2295kg - Towing weight 1950.75kg (using 85% rule and european system)
Well, we are now looking for our first caravan. The Elgrand is still going strong and we now have two little children (one at 18 months old and one at 4 weeks old). So I feel it's time to put the tent away (until they are about 5 ish) and get something that we can press a button to get some heat!
I'm basing the max towing weight on the elgrand.co.uk figures produced by the padre as shown above. Probably go for something around the 1700 mark.
Hi I'm just resurrecting this old post to let you know I am Admin on the following UK Elgrand clubs, so if you are after more information or cant get logged on for some reason, give me a shout:
