You're right, you can start it when the glow plug light goes out. The problem is he glow plugs wear out & don't work as well. We had to run ours twice to fire up our old astra & in the end we had a new set fitted. Run the plugs twice will sort it for you but make sure your battery is kept right up there on power, that's a fairish egine you have there & must be a pull on the battery on a cold morning.

I've no idea how much a set of glowplugs would cost you fitted but I'd be inclined to obtain a quote from a main ford dealer as well as any other garage you may use. The price difference may not be that much & the main dealer work should carry a warranty worthy of the difference. My mate wanted a front brake disc pad renewal, a cam belt changed & a service on his mondeo. The price difference between a side street garage, run b a very nice fully qualified honest chap who would have used factored parts & a main dealership using genuine parts with warranty was only £90 & I'd reckon £90 well spent for peace of mind & the warranty.
