I tend to agree with you there - as a fellow Sorrie owner! However, there's no telling the badge snobs!!
We had an ML320 to tow our heavy twin axle, changed it for a diesel Sorrento and whilst it was good in terms of stability it couldn't hold 60mph uphill, gearbox was too slow at changing down. We changed it for a Cayenne S and it tows amazing, set cruise at 60mph and it holds it no matter what hill you throw at it. It's also a misconception that you must have loads of money to buy a Cayenne, sure ours new was around £80K but we bought used and paid £14K for a mint car, had it 4 years now still worth about £10K, have only spent an average of £200 a year maintenance and it's never let us down. Previous owner took the hit on depreciation and we have an Ulta reliable, hi spec we'll built car that has worked out the best value for money of all the 4x4s. Only downside is ours is 4.8L V8 petrol and yes it's a bit heavy on fuel, 25mpg solo, 17mpg towing 2000Kg, doesn't cost us that much extra as do around 5000 miles per year and have other cars. For higher mileage the diesel would be more economical. And yes Cayenne, Tourag and Q7 are all built in same platform, difference is engines, suspension, wheels and interior.

OK to actually answer the OP. My current car is an Audi A6 allroad Estate, bought new in 2016. Mechanically, it is pretty much exactly the same car as the Porsche Cayenne or the VW Touareg 3.0 diesel except I get air suspension as standard ie The engine/gearbox and most of the oily bits are the same on all three cars. (So yes they do a diesel Cayenne, in fact most of them are V6 3.0 litre diesels)
As far as towing is concerned, I would assume they would tow pretty much as well as my A6, if not better. So in answer to the OP - my guess is the Porsche would be utterly brilliant at towing, but don't take my word for it. Do a little (Google) research and I'm 100% sure if you can find the review I read, you will see that the Porsche is a superb tow vehicle.
As for the cost of a tow bar, same logic applies. The cost would be pretty much the same as for my Audi. I had a removable "Swan neck" tow bar fitted, fully integrated etc for less than £500.
I did seriously consider the Cayenne, as my previous car was a Porsche, and Porsche are very keen to retain customers. But I settled on the A6, I don't in anyway regret my choice but be assured any of the three cars I have mentioned would make simply superb and effortless tow vehicles.
