The turbo problem has been solved by a manufacturer recall and engine remap on the pre-2007 models (post 2007 are a new model). The X-Trail is a superb tow car.
The fact that it's a "superb tow car" may in fact be true (biased much...?!) but the problem has only been solved for those owners who have actually taken their X-Trail back to Nissan for the work to be done. It doesn't necessarily help those who haven't had direct correspondence from Nissan to notify them of the recall (ie, everyone who bought one second hand) or haven't read about the recall anywhere online.
A recall doesn't do you much good if your turbo blows when you're dragging your caravan through the Pyrenees.....

a recall should be notiied to all registered owners .either from new or seconhand .i had a recall from mitsubishi last year andmy truck was 9 year old andi am the seventh owner. there is a very good recall system in operation in uk.

I think you may have been lucky. I didn't receive a notification of a possible issue with the EGR valve on my CR-V though it was a TSB, not a recall. But according to Honda I should have still received something even though it was issued a couple of years ago. I know a couple of people who owned Peugeot 307s (one from new) and they didn't receive certain recall notices (and there's quite a list!).

Have you looked at a Land Rover Freelander 1? It would be an 87% match for your van. It's a cracking towcar, and is actually fun to drive!
For your budget, you could get a late Freelander 1, round about £5-7,000 having just had a quick look on the www.
Make sure you get a TD4, which has the BMW engine, and it'll pull your van all over the place! We were on a site where rain stopped play and they were using tractors to get everybody out. Well, almost everybody! We just hitched up and pulled out.
It may not harm your son's street cred either!! The only issue might be in terms of rear seat space, as the new Freelander definitely has more leg room. You could do a lot worse though.

Fair point about the Freelander Glyn and it's definitely an option the OP should consider. I liked the look of that but it was the Honda reputation for reliability and service that swung it towards the CR-V.
