No one in their right mind would wish to do 50000 miles a year in a Micra etc.

If you read my post fully this is an example of how futile it is to quote surveys nothing more.

With regards to the VW lump, the 1.9PD lump is brilliant, and so far the 2.0 common rail has proved to have no particular problems. The 2.0PD Is the one with the problems, and oil changes have nothing to do with the longevity of the unit. Oil pump drive, injectors, injector looms andcambelt tensioners won't be improved even if you change the oil every 10000 feet. The common rail is far more refined than the PD which is a rattly ol thing by modern standards, and doesn't deserve to be tarred with the same brush.

VWs PD system was a lot more efficient than the early CR systems, operating at far higher pressures and giving more power and better economy, so rather than being a graduation it would have been - at the time - a retrograde step.

Wow i've been in ford cars for the last 7 years with no faults at all and no oil needed, I thought the passat was just as good if not better ??? than the mondeo.

i'll have to deep drill the list when it comes out

its a myth in my experience that german marques are the best..i was sucked in by the hype  (plus couldnt afford a good spec mondy at the time )...add to that the higher cost of parts (£700+ to renew a diesel injector for instance !!!! ) and it aint economically viable to run one if you are going to be paying for repairs yourself.

nice cars all the same but the failure rate of stuff ive never had go wrong with cars before and the cost to put right means id not go back to vw anytime soon

Ditto here with a VW built Ford Galaxy, and a recently bodyshop loaned VW passat was a real eye opener, most annoying car ever!
