I had my towbar fitted at PF Jones in Manchester (just off Chester Road).
They were miles cheaper than BMW and fitted a `proper` BMW loom, and a detachable Westfalia bar (as per BMW).

One point worth noting as it is a company car - if you have it fitted by the dealer prior to delivery the price is added to the list price of the vehicle for P11D purposes. If you have it fitted afterwards, it does not.

Ah well, worth pointing out then that those who buy their own cars Ford/Audi/VW/BMW from a showroom can indeed have 13pin socket fully wired if they require. They just need to understand that 13pin sockets come wired as 7pin if not otherwise specified.

Fortunately because of this thread they now have the required info.

Response from BMW UK - You cannot get full 13pin (ISO11446) operation as a factory fit option, will have to be a aftersale addition.

I can advise that a detachable towbar with 13-pin European electrical socket, may require additional wiring connectors dependent on towing usage, which is available from aftersales departments and is not a factory fitted option.  I am sorry that you have not been given this information from the retailing dealership at time of order.  I would recommend that you take this up with the retailing dealership.

All BMW appear to be saying is that towbar & wiring is a dealer fit option & if you want full 13pin wiring an extra loom is required which is what you said in your op.

This emphasises the importance of the customer understanding what they require & getting it in writing on the invoice, although I would agree with you that salesmen/service receptionists should be conversant with the needs of their caravanning customers.

You should have been given the option of trailer or full caravan wiring & advised of the extra cost at the time but obviously your local BMW dealer staff did not have to knowledge to do this.

Yes but for us though and the type of tow bar we have & because we wanted the cost of the towbar included in the cost of the car, then written on the invoice or not we still would've had to re- book the car in for the extra loom regardless as the type of tow bar we have is not a dealer fit option.  So if you order a BMW with a factory fit tow bar regardless of what is on the order form you will need to retro fit the additional wiring to tow a caravan.  Which basically means a full factory fit tow bar will end up costing you £1200 rather than what is stated on the options list.

The towbar & wiring is fitted by the BMW dealer workshop not in the BMW factory. If a customer requires a towbar when they purchase the car from a BMW dealer the staff should ask whether trailer or caravan wiring is required & advise of cost accordingly.

It would appear from numerous threads about this subject that main dealer staff of Ford/VW/Audi/BMW dealers often do not do this, presumably thru lack of knowledge.

However you do say that yours is a company car, do you mean you ordered the car + towbar from your company & not actually face to face in main dealer showroom?

Ah yes, just read back thru the thread, you said earlier that after an enquiry you were advised of the extra cost of full wiring, it is of course expected that full 13pin(ie old 12n/12s)wiring will cost more than 7pin wiring even tho on most OE looms a 13pin socket is still supplied for 7pin wiring.

No bad thing tho because an adaptor can be used for 7pin trailer plug & the option is there to upgrade to fully wired.

Was the car(& towbar)supplied to your company thru a dealer not local to you & it is your local BMW workshop who is going to do the new wiring?

Yes, but with BMW you get a 13 pin socket, and more than the standard 7-Pin connectivity, so they clearly know its not a lights only application.

You just lose out two connections - the fridge supply.

Quite simple, not ISO14466, not fit for purpose.

Westfalia, who make the towbars BMW use, only make two looms; one is 7 pin staturary lights, the other is 13-P (with 12 populated) standard 13-P (12S/12N).  BMW have taken it upon themselves to reject the standard Westfalia wire kit and supply a modified, reduced function, not ISO compliant 10 wire loom.

Its a damn conn, and for the sake of two lengths of wire and a split charge relay, which in a BMW can be in the boot where the battery is, they expect you to rip apart your new motor, have the entire loom that is fitted removed and pay £500 for adding in £20 worth of copper and relay.

Please keep this topic live if you have the same issue, they deserve to be lambasted for this.

The real shame is, apart from this, its a really great electric towbar that even integrates with the cars ESP/DSC to provide anti-snaking function when the caravan is connected, and even a tow bar hook up feasture on the reversing camera.  This issue asside, its the best set up in the world.  What a wasted opportunity to actually have people raving about how good it is rather than raving mad about them.

I'd have paid an extra £50 for the option, if that was felt needed.  That's all it would take to add two wires at the build stage.

the Westfalia 13 pin kit also requires a continous load line kit, ive fitted my towbar last month, on my 528, what you need is this kit from fleebay

its 1 earth line, 1 permenant live and a switched live, i think there over priced and made mine for around a £10.
as for fitting the kit as most batterys are in the boot it shouldnt take longer than an hour to fit, for bmw i bet it takes them 15mins

Very useful, and cheaper from Amazon or Towsure direct.

So to answer the OP:  How much for the additional loom (2 poxy wires FFS on a car at least £30K and perhaps £50K) that BMW don't fit:-

£30 if you do it yourself (using Westfalia original equipment solution)

£500 if you get BMW to do it for you

Nil if you threaten to sue them as not fit for purpose (which it isn't)

I've had my 5 Series for just over a year and have been banging my head against a brick wall with my BMW dealer over this. They just don't understand the issue.

I nearly gave up but I was recently sent a customer satisfaction survey and I marked them really low. It worked! I got a call from the Service Manager and the Parts Manager (who is new to be fair to him). They now have the correct parts.

I'm waiting for the phone call to tell me how much they want to charge for this fitted.

What I don't understand is why BMW don't fit the correct 13-pin socket in the factory. The additional cost must be next to nothing. The dealer could then fit the split charge relay for those people who need it.

If you read thread all through you will see that an extra loom is required for full 13pin operation rather than just the pins to work trailer lights.

Just heard from my dealer. They told me the wiring kit comes with a 13-pin to 2 x 7-pin adapter cable. I told them I didn't need that and they took £60(!) off the bill.

They are now quoting £290 for parts and labour.

What the dealer showed me consisted of a split-charge relay with a few lengths of lose wire connected to it. It didn't look anything special and not difficult to fit (if you know what you are doing). I wouldn't describe it as a loom! ;-)

I understand the need for extra wiring but I the point I was making is that it would not be difficult (or more expensive) for a factory fit towbar to come with all of the pins even if it requires dealer fitted wiring to make them live.

Bit naughty trying to charge £60 for what can be bought elsewhere for half that. Its fair to say that car main dealers know little about specific towbar wiring requirements & one cannot really expect a car salesman to advise.

The way forward for anybody wanting a dealer fit towbar on a new car is to have 'fully wired 13pin socket required' & whatever else they want written on sales invoice then dealer has to get it right at no extra cost to buyer.

Tentz - I'll certainly know for next time!

I went for a factory fit tow bar because on my last car I put on an after market tow bar as it was cheaper. After it was fitted, I had to go to my dealer (VW) to have the ECU updated (which they charged me for - £60 if I remember correctly).

Many months later, I had an electrical problem which resulted in the dealer blaming the tow bar electrics. It turned out there was a fault with the tow bar electrics BUT the dealer also hadn't programmed the ECU correctly.

This time, I thought factory fit was the no-hassle way to go (even if it was more expensive).

This post has my head spinning! We had a towbar fitted on our 520d by a mobile fitter for £250. Worked fine with last 2 caravans. Didn't realise it was that complicated! BMW was great tower but actually getting rid because sick of costly maintenance and repairs. The cars nowhere near as reliable as I expected. Genuinely hope you experience better.
