Have you considered a Santa Fe? The new shape (2006 onwards) is a great car - very reliable, 5-year warranty and get the 7-seater which has self-levelling suspension.

We've been towing our 1325kg max weight Compass with our 2005 XTrail SVE for five years. We absolutely love it.Every year it spends the summer in France and does around 3,000 towing miles a year.We also have two bikes on a hitch mounted carrier. The turbo was replaced at 50,000 miles under warranty, but I understand this was a problem with the earlier XTrails and not the newer versions.-have a look online at 'Honest John'for his comments.
The car tows with ease and is a really comfortable ride.We can get high 30's to the gallon towing.I would recommend an XTrail without hesitation.Look around any site, lots of other people think so to.

Hi Everyone,

Well a positive update for you.........We have found a lovely Jan 09 plate X-Trail sport 2.0 diesel with only 23000 miles on the clock, one owner from new and full dealer service history! Its in black and also has privacy glass on all the rear windows. Took it for a test drive this afternoon and it was fantastic and in great condition. We have had a haggle and they have given us a bit more on the p/x than book price and also a few hundred off the sales price.

It was up for £14499 which was more than we wanted to spend but we are doing a loan with M&S (good rates at the moment from them) so will just extend this a bit longer to allow for this. The price for the mileage was fair and it was in better condition than others we have seen. As we intend to keep it for years this shouldn't be a problem. Its just had its 3rd service and will come with 12 months MOT and I also managed to get some proper x-trail mats thrown in! There is one small scuff on the bumper which they are getting touched up so just need to wait for the loan to come through before we can collect!

It doesn't have a towbar fitted at the moment but as we won't be using the van again until April there is plenty of time to save for this. Its a lot of money to spend but we think it will last us for years and tend to keep our cars for 6 years+ anyway. The extra boot space will be great for all the baby stuff! I loved the hill start assist on the x-trail.....when on a 10% incline you can release the handbrake and it won't roll back until you touch the throttle (well thats how they explained it)! Could be useful when towing a heavy van! Will try and post a few pics as and when we collect it!

Thanks for everyones advice as it was the positive comments on here that swung us towards the x-trail

Darren

As the OP is thinking of a Freelander 2 I can't see that dodgy engines would be relevant, same engine as fitted in the Freelander 2 as in the Citroen 2.2 and Peugeot 2.2, engine made by Ford at Dagenham just different engine management software. Considering the original Freelander shares nothing whatsoever with the Freelander 2 it is totally irrelevant. Same old thing, never first hand experience just pub talk.

Obviously it looks as if you have already made your decision, but we have had a Freelander 2 for 4 years now, used for towing over the last 2 years.

I love the car infact its the best car I have ever had, it looks good, it has a Land Rover badge, its great in the snow, will go anywhere I know I've been on the Land Rover experience and to top it all it pulls like a train!

You cannot compare it to the previous Freelander it is a totally different beast!

Have to say when we come to change the car it will be another Land Rover!
Love it!

Thanks for the above. The FR2 was a close 2nd but we could just get a bit more for our money with the X-Trail and also I guess I am a bit cautious about landrovers after my previous experience. The boot on the X-Trail was also bigger which with young children was a plus! In the end they are both great cars and the FR2 is a tad heavier...I would probably have been happy with either but can't wait to pick up the new wheels!

Did you know that 75% of all Land Rovers ever made are sadly still on the road. But true to form are keeping us garage workers in very full time employment. Come on Landy owners, you know you love em, Keep spending.
