Hi Everyone,
Well a positive update for you.........We have found a lovely Jan 09 plate X-Trail sport 2.0 diesel with only 23000 miles on the clock, one owner from new and full dealer service history! Its in black and also has privacy glass on all the rear windows. Took it for a test drive this afternoon and it was fantastic and in great condition. We have had a haggle and they have given us a bit more on the p/x than book price and also a few hundred off the sales price.
It was up for £14499 which was more than we wanted to spend but we are doing a loan with M&S (good rates at the moment from them) so will just extend this a bit longer to allow for this. The price for the mileage was fair and it was in better condition than others we have seen. As we intend to keep it for years this shouldn't be a problem. Its just had its 3rd service and will come with 12 months MOT and I also managed to get some proper x-trail mats thrown in! There is one small scuff on the bumper which they are getting touched up so just need to wait for the loan to come through before we can collect!
It doesn't have a towbar fitted at the moment but as we won't be using the van again until April there is plenty of time to save for this. Its a lot of money to spend but we think it will last us for years and tend to keep our cars for 6 years+ anyway. The extra boot space will be great for all the baby stuff! I loved the hill start assist on the x-trail.....when on a 10% incline you can release the handbrake and it won't roll back until you touch the throttle (well thats how they explained it)! Could be useful when towing a heavy van! Will try and post a few pics as and when we collect it!
Thanks for everyones advice as it was the positive comments on here that swung us towards the x-trail
Darren

I have never owned a Freelander but some of my mates have they all got rid of them all sortes of problems, dodgey engines, transmission problems, all expensive problems.I have MG zt cdti 2 litre , its getting on a bit now has 55,000 miles on clock, it tows great 30-35 miles per gall, 55 + on a run, & I dont know what to replace it with, maybe x-Trail not the former!
As the OP is thinking of a Freelander 2 I can't see that dodgy engines would be relevant, same engine as fitted in the Freelander 2 as in the Citroen 2.2 and Peugeot 2.2, engine made by Ford at Dagenham just different engine management software. Considering the original Freelander shares nothing whatsoever with the Freelander 2 it is totally irrelevant. Same old thing, never first hand experience just pub talk.
