I was about to deal for a LWB Shogun to hawl a Hobby Excellent Easy 540 UFE  @1500kgs . Google turns up that the aussies downunder are trading their Shoguns / Troopers like crazy for Hyundai Terracans. I delved a bit deeper and found that Hyundai build the Shogun for Mitsubishi. It also turns out the new Shogun is of monocoque construction, no Chassis to which the Body is bolton on. Possible to bend over rough ground. Trooper , well I bought a new Trooper Citation 3.0 tdi about 2 years back, never again I say, too many problems and thrown together not built, plasticy interior  all for a 28K price tag, sore on diesel 28mpg solo, feather footed, 17mpg towing caravan [ long m6 run ] Result Sold it on after just 8k miles. The fly-by-wire throttle is pain in the butt .

So I ended up buying The Hyundai Terracan , 2.9 Tdci turbo intercooled diesel engine. It has a ladder frame chassis , you won,t bend, tows the Hobby like a dream, goes like a rocket without and handles great to boot, if one behaves and observes the legal towing speed for the first time towing with any vehicle there seems to be no increase in fuel comsumption, (33mpg), rides more like a car than a 4x4, a pleasure to do long Motorway trips, friends have commented on this. Best of all they start at £18495 otr G12 Insurance also 5Years Warranty + 3 Years RAC Cover. Shogun 3.2 however  delivers the same 161 bhp , 22mpg, G16 Insurance, But Don't take my word for it , I have had 89 cars/ 4x4's etc in 27 years of driving. But I could be wrong. Go check it out for yourself.  And by the way I don't have any affilliations at all with  Hyundai Heavy Industries. The only other comes close is the Toyota Landcruiser Amazon

Hi ,  yes well over my budget too , Funny Toyota will only quote you a price on application, I suspect they are discounting them. you are right ,  it used to be the case with the older amazons, but not now , too many others at half or less the price.  Even Mitsubishi can't fetch their asking anymore.  See what you are offered for the the shogun when you  trade it, you'll be shocked  how much it has depreciated.

Even if the Terracan is  ordered with all the extras leather etc. It still only comes to less than,  £21K . Personally for less than Amazon money[  6 numbers required on a Wed or Sat draw     ]I 'd buy a Yank 4x4 [ diesel of course ]  Chevrolet Surburban or something, comes with a 6 litre diesel , does the same mpg as the Amazon, tows 5 tons easily.  $40K new.

Had a mate with a top of the range all bells and whistles toyota Rav 4  2.0 tdi , broke his heart for the last 3 years, he spent more time in the courtesy car than the Toyota. Apart from all that went wrong, Toyota couldn't stop the footwells filling up when it rained. Not good for the leather upholstery. Also what you need to watch out for, the Rav 4 and the likes are a car that looks like a jeep, their not !!!! they are a monocoque { NO CHASSIS }  I've personally known/seen certain   cars which when towing a caravan , stretched enough for the rear door to pop open !!    this 100% true.

Regards

AL
