Bought a Sorento when they first came out in 2003, replacing a Terrano.

Kept it for 8 years before trading it in for a Chrysler 300C Touring.

The only problems I had was in year 8 when I had to replace both rear brake calipers - £200 each and problems with the inside of the fuel tank delaminating - £800 to fix.

we use a sorento. had a sportage before. love them both. had a freelander a couple of years ago but found the seats a bit too tight as they are molded. Loved how it seemed to eat the miles and felt solid and capable of going anywhere do anything. The Kia is comfy and drives well with a coachman wander lux 19/4 on the back. It does lean on round-abouts but it is quite a tall vehicle - as is a landy or range rover. Its roomy for long legs and head room both fron and back and oodles of boot space.
You can get any doozey of a car whether it be new or used and it is personal preference really. test drive both. you have to see what feels best for you.
Me, Im a kia kinda gal hope you find a bargain and a good un no matter what you decide

Just throwing the Vauxhall Antara into the mix. The new version has a different engine to the original and we are really happy with it. Cost wise a lot less than a Kia and has a 10 year/lifetime warranty. Very stable, pulling up Devon/Cornwall hills in 5th, occassional drop to 4th when behind a tractor!!!!

MPG depends on the terrain/wind. We did 25mpg down to Cornwall but get 30-35mpg in East Anglia!!!!

Our local Vauxhall place had a couple of Antara not very old massive reduction in price.I don't think you'd get the warranty though.

They are also selling pre-reg Vauxhalls with the full warranty.(Mainly Astras and Corsa). Trouble is depreciation on new cars is big!

regarding comment from pee jay regarding economy of auto. You are spot on - the autos do use a bit more fuel. Unlike the older sorento which the auto used a lot more fuel. As pee jay mentioned the facelift model (which is what I bought) has revised suspension subframes and sports sls from the kx2 upwards (not sure about kx1). All facelift models are 2.2 turbodiesel with 4wd 'on demand', no low range box though. I agree new model a bit less stable than the old skool car when towing but nothing like unstable. And solo my new auto kx2 sat nav uses no more and maybe even a bit less fuel than my old 2009 manual diesel car and drives much more like a normal car instead of a 4wd (if you know what I mean). But it cost more to buy. Either revision are great in their own way. Older one is cheaper to buy but more expensive to run. New ones are much more expensive to buy and cheaper to run. If you do buy the new model push out the boat and get the facelift one. Dealer tells me old models and facelift models fly off fourcourt but the earlier new ones stick a bit. May be down to reports of poor stability towing which is the whole point of a bigger towcar - it should be more stable...

Our 2012 KX2 is very stable -I am not sure if it has SLS, as it was an ex-demo. It is a 7 seater(optional on pre facelift) so may have. Must speak to Kia and ask sometime. It certainly sits pretty level all the time.

To be honest I am not too concerned as it is so good.

Two trips to France this year-no stability issues
Posts on Sorento forum reporting instability seemed to be with a big twin axle van.
My wife drives it most of the time and loves it. It was brilliant in the snow this year-as was previous old style Titan.

I reiterate 664DaveS comment re how good the new Sorento is in the snow.  It doesn't have a transfer box like the old one, but last year we had a lot of snow in Derbyshire (as elsewhere) and it was brilliant.
