Simon - I have seen some VERY optimistic figures on here! Yours is about on a par with our Saab. 150 bhp, Sentronic 'box (has the 'slush' torque converter so some loss there) we get between 25 & 30 to the gallon towing depending on the wind direction, cruise set to 65 as soon as we are on open roads. Solo can get as high as 51-52 but that is driving like Miss Daisy, ie at about 65mph. Solo with cruise set at 80 gives us about 45-47.
I am happy with the towing figure, although the previous Saab, a manual, used to give us about 33-34. However, I just love the relaxed driving with the auto quite apart from the benefit for me (bad arthritis left ankle)
Pete
Pete  you do know the speed limits for towing don't you.  You have stated cruise set to 65 when we hit the open road  towing on a motorway the legal speed for towing is 60 and for normal  roads it's 50

Do you use 6th gear at 60mph? Dont.

Leave it in 5th and your MPG will improve. Although it pulls fine in 6th gear your actually using more fuel than 5th.

The required torque isnt quite enough for the best economy at 60mph. So it uses a touch more fuel.

Sounds mad but trust me it works.

Imaging riding a pushbike up a steep hill, 1st gear you pedal a lot and move a little but little effort required.
As you move up the gears its harder to pedal but you move further.

Imagine 5th gear your still sitting and pedalling, Its hard work but you manage.
Now change upto 6th and you need to get off the seat and work harder. Using more energy (fuel).

6th gear is very tall these days.

Hi Robert & Julie - yes, I am aware of the speed limits! When I say open roads, I do mean m/ways and D/C. Also according to my sat nav, our speedo reads a few mph fast at around 60. I actually do set the cruise at 63, and 53 for single carriage, but of course depending on surrounding traffic.

You are so right grampian91. One of the reasons I like our car being an auto is that the system will ensure that the car is always in the right gear. I have checked by popping the gear lever over to M on a few occasions also viewing the rev counter, and the car with the van on never gets into 6th. If I use manual, and put it into 6th even on a downhill stretch, at an indicated 63 (true 60) it will go straight back into 5th. This is why I am more than satisfied with the mpg. With our previous Saab, I did cruise on many an occasion in 6th but the meter indeed showed worse mpg than in 5th.

Not really concerned with mpg as we have a 3.5tonne fully laden 6-wheel drawbar trailer pulled by a V8 Discovery 2 on LPG.

Worst we have seen is about 10mpg when in some really hilly conditions, but in Holland we get 15mpg on LPG which equates to approximately 23-24mpg equivalent petrol.

It's a means to get from A to B, if we had to worry about fuel consumption we wouldn't have the rig we have or the big diesel engine in the back of it.

I get 24mpg towing a Challenger sport (quite heavy) car fully loaded with cider and real ale 17

Towing with an X-Trail 2.2.

We will be changing the car soon - probably for a Kia Sorrento.

The Mitsubishi Outlanders look quite interesting - the 2.2 to 2.5 versions - not the 2ltr.  Not powerful enough.

Anyone had one of these ?

Indicated 40mpg when towing the Conway Crusader FC (approx 1000kg) down to 29mpg now we have the Elddis (approx 1200kg). That's with a Skoda Superb 170 DSG. My normal commute gets me 35mpg though that's a lot of city traffic.

It's the change in height that's made the big difference - the FC was slightly lower than the car and only a gnat's wider so didn't present much frontage to the wind.

I reckon the height issue is probably costing us too. Our new (to us) Eccles Topaz is definitely higher than the outgoing Swift Classic Coronette. The manual Saab we had used to give us about 33mpg towing the Swift. Our first trip this year was with the auto Saab with the Swift and was doing about 28-32mpg; now the auto Saab pulling the Eccles is doing 25-30, as I said, depending on wind direction.
Is your Superb saloon or estate? I quite like them, and would definitely like the 170bhp estate with DSG.

It's the estate (or 'Combi' in Skoda speak). We had never even thought of towing anything, I just really wanted a Superb estate when they were announced. It just so happened that some months later we bought the FC.

The combination of the DSG box and cruise control is great and makes towing effortless, especially when dealing with steep downhill gradients. The car will automatically drop down through the gears to maintain the set speed without having to apply the brakes.

Honda CRV 2.2 ctdi towing Lunar Stellar MTPLM 1195 + car well loaded = pretty consistent MPG - 30 checked fill to fill and on board calculation - identical. Unless against headwind when circa 28.

Solo 43/45 - best ever 51 from Saumur France to Dunkerque. -450 approx. on autoroute and some single.. Tend to stick to 50/60 mph and inside French limits.

Quite pleased for a big tug. Must check 5th v 6th as I tend to keep in highest gear short of labouring.

Nice one. Regrettably for us as we are now both retired, the well-known situation of plenty of time now but not the income to go with it means a mild lotto win would be needed to change. (plus, as 'er indoors says, we have only recently got the Saab [last Dec I keep telling her, makes no difference])

over the last 1250 miles ive kept a record of mpg both calculated by me and compared to the OBC.
350 miles towing , 900 solo the combined average worked out to 42.7 mpg , the OBC makes it 46.3 mpg.

We are looking at getting another caravan next year, two berth about 1275 kg we have seen a few around this weight.
However I don't want to buy a really big car as my weekly mileage consists of mainly short journeys so was thinking of a Golf 2.0 tdi 140 bhp, 2009 ish.
Does this look reasonable on mpg on short journeys and acceptable towing performance?

Golf is no doubt a good car - the important tech details when chosing a car

1) The caravan should be no more that 85% the weight of the car

2) The tech detail to look out for is the torque - NOT the BHP.

For example - Our caravan is about 1550kg - I'm looking for a torque of over 250 lbs in a car. The Kia Sorento is 285 - which is excelent.  The Landrover Frelander is 295. But a bit heavy on juice.

Look for a car where the torque is no less that 210 lbs for your van.
