You only need a breakaway with the new fangled alko hitches that split and sheer if you look at them wrong.
I don't even know what that means.
On a lighter note...hitched up today with no unnecessary hand gestures! He's learning!
I've always tried to match up an even amount of the caravan/ trailer in the mirrors and reverse slowly until the hitch on the trailer just contacted the drawbar. It has always worked until this weekend when I picked up a mini digger and the trailer was narrower than my mirrors!
With reference to the breakaway cable it was always advised not to wrap it round the drawbar as if the trailer became detached the drawbar could lift the cable with it. Everybody does it though and in my experience it makes no difference, the breakaway cable will snap before it manages to pull the brakes on anyway.
I found a flexible neck with a suction cup holder at our local recycling centre (I think it was a hair dryer holder which I would have no use for whatsoever). Anyway, I managed to cable-tie a small rectangular mirror on the end and can now fix it to the rear screen on my Laguna estate. With the correct angling it gives a direct view down onto the tow ball in the rear view mirror. Do I get a Blue Peter badge?
