How do you know he is looking for something economical to tow with?

Read his post he wants a vehicle for everyday use as well as towing, a smaller vehicle would be much easier to park when needed, the RFL is cheaper and possibly the insurance, and servicing

What is it with you Boab and this "easier to park" cr*p.

-------------
XVI yes?

As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.

If you have one , how often do you have to go around looking for a space big enough on the street or car park, they are in most cases wider and longer than a car after all

Well Bob I've read both posts from the OP and none of them say what you wrote above, or perhaps have you assumed this?

The op mentions considering an xc90 though which doesn't really align with what you are recommending.

Just replaced our 55 plate mondeo estate tdci towcar with, wait for it, another mondeo estate tdci. This time on a 10 plate with a 2.2 tdci engine and the titanium x spec. Averages 44mpg on regular driving about, 55mpg on a good run and 35mpg with the 1400kg tin tent behind.
Can recommend it more as a stable, capable tow car with 175bhp and 400ish ft/lb of torque it pulls well in all gears. Secondhand its a lot of car for the money.

We have a motorhome now, but we have towed a caravan in the past with a few different cars, we had a Mondeo (I still have one now as my daily car albeit a newer model) they are great car to drive and known for the good drive they give.

Also towed with a ford galaxy auto which was tedious as the gearbox would constantly drop down a gear on the slightest hill, but pulled well.

A citroen C5, and also a volvo s60.

However the best one of the lot was a Kia Sedona.

All the cars had plenty of power, but I found the Kia the most stable unit, none of the slight sway you get with some cars when lorries come flying past etc, generally a more relaxing experience and loads of room for any kit!

We also have an X5 now, I have never had to tow with it but imagine its up to the job its a 3.0d and loads of power, fuel economy not great, and we have had a few big repair bills. Still have a common problem with the auto box lurching when coming to a stop that its been in 4 times for, so I personally would not recommend one and wouldn't buy one again.

I took an XC90 out for a test drive before I bought the X5, and I didn't like the drive as much as the X5,

Its already been said you are going to get lots of recommendations on here! If it was me I would go for size and weight of towcar to get the stability.

I have not been keeping up with toucher threads and things in the last few years but I am sure I also remember some problems with certain auto boxes when towing, some needing an additional cooler fitted, but this could be on older cars I honestly can't remember but worth checking if you go for an auto

good luck whatever you choose!

Speaking from experience going from a Volvo S60 D5 to a Vectra which dont get me wrong is a great tow car but it is like night and day with the Volvo, If you are in the postion to buy another Volvo I definitely would and go for the D5 engine, they drive and tow effortlessly
