The yanks have had automatics, almost from the get go.
I have to agree. I can see the point of a manual gearbox in something like a Caterham 7, or a Lotus, or any other sports car, but that's about all. Still wouldn't want to drive one in traffic though.
The clutch and gear lever are there for the benefit of the car rather than the driver, simply because the internal combustion engine has such a comparatively limited power-band. I have always thought that they should have gone the way of the manual mixture control, manual advance & retard, and the choke control. All of which have been fully automated for many decades.

I have a Powershift, also 6 speed, and have total control over gear selection and engine braking if needed/wanted. It is not unique to TC boxes, I do not know why people think this.
But I would also NEVER go back to a Manual. They seem pointless now.

Has anyone said that it is unique to TC boxes? It certainly isn't the reason I prefer TC boxes. I just like the action of the torque converter, doubling up the torque on pull-away, giving variable ratios in each gear, and smoothing out gear-changes. I must admit that I have never owned a vehicle with a DSG or Powershift box, but they do seem to need more gears than a TC box. My Volvo has a 4 speed box, and I have never found a need for more. Previous autos I have owned have only had 3 gears, and I can remember the old Vauxhalls with a 2 speed auto box back in the 1960s. I think it was called a Powerdrive box, and was fitted to the Crestas.

Like many other TC gearboxes I can flip it across to the "manual" position where the engine braking effect works just fine, for hill decents etc. I sometimes use manual for overtaking with the van, if I want it to stay in a lower gear until I have passed a slower moving vehicle. I then just flip it back to auto and away we go.
Sorry Colin, but the above quote infers that it is unique to TC boxes, which as you know it isn't. If I have interpreted it wrong then I do apologise.
I left school in 74 and did my C&G apprenticeship, 4 years, in Motor Vehicle Technology, I spent 10 or so years working on vehicles, I must confess to not liking it and got out, thank goodness, but it has left me with that background knowledge to be able to service and do most repairs on my 12 year old Ranger Pick up. Would never touch my Kuga.........I wouldn't have a clue! So the old 2 and 3 speed BW autos are no stranger to me......Vauxhall Cresta! That takes me back, it was a load of rubbish though 😀
My Kuga is a 2.0 180bhp Powershift, 13 months old now, and last year towed the van to Brittany, Charente, Pyrenees, Dordogne, Brittany then home covering 2500 miles in 4 weeks, it was the most pleasurable towing experience I have ever had, faultless and able to cope with whatever was thrown at it. I would have absolutely no issue with changing to a TC box, it is an Auto, but have absolutely no issue with the Powershift either. The changes are quick and seamless, hill start effortless and has an uncanny habit of always being in the right gear on hill decent due the recognising an incline. All clever stuff.
The modern Auto box is unrecognisable from the 60s/70s/80s and 90s, is reliable, and makes for an effortless and more relaxed driving experience whether solo or towing. Manual does seem pointless to me now. I have one of each and know which one I prefer, but my wife would not be impresses with a Deer carcass, stinking mutts and feed in the back of her beloved Ford Kuga!
Back to the original question, Auto every time for towing 😀👍
