It’s probably worth pointing out here that the style of car you obviously want & a car for towing a caravan are not totally mutually compatible. If you want to tow a caravan you need a different style of car. Something more along the lines of an Suv. You could probably stay with Merc & still get that or plenty of other upmarket type Suv available.

It's a 64 plate!

Mine is an 11 plate.

I have had confirmation from the National Trailer & Towing Association, and the C&CC that my vehicle should never had had a tow bar fitted.

The absence of a weight shown on the VIN plate is game set and match as far as they are both concerned.

Still waiting for a response from the tow bar company.

As it happens we were going to change the car anyway, but this has just sped things up a bit.

Gutted for you. What I find puzzling is that it appears that it wasn't type approved due to a fluid reservoir being just behind the bumper and taking up the room, yet you've managed to have one fitted.

Mine does not have an adblue tank fitted so I don't think that caused the problem.
I have been informed that Merc simply did not get the AMG model approved only the SE version.

Not heard back from the tow bar company yet.
I think they have run for the hills.

Remember that having a tow bar fitted does not mean you are going to tow. I know people who have had one fitted so that they can fit a bike carrier, and have never considered towing.

The DVSA statement is quite specific, if the weight plate does not have the relevant section marked then you cannot tow, and there are many vehicles that fall into that catagory.
If you did get stopped then it would be expensive; you risk a heavy fine for towing with a non-approved vehicle, and another for invalidating your insurance, and at worst the possible loss of both the car and the caravan. Even if the vehicles were only impounded you would get a large bill for their recovery and storage.

It appears that the OP's car has not been Type Approved by Merc for 2 reasons. 1, because the fitting of the AdBlue tank on that model gets in the way of the tow bar mountings, and 2, because they consider it a sports model so the suspension is not considered suitable.
If the OP can prove they told the salesman they wanted to tow with it then they have a legitimate claim against the dealer.

Just to clarify.

The car does NOT have an adblue tank.

Yet to be clarified by Merc, but my understanding is it relates to the larger alloys.

Now I am aware of the situation I do not intend to tow the caravan with this car.

Ok, well after waiting all day for a call that hasn't arrived my husband called the dealer at 3:30pm.

We were fobbed of with "oh he's not available twice but on a third attempt finally got to speak with the sales guy.

He said we can collect our original car and the funds we paid will be back in our account 3 working days later.

Thank god!!

But no apology, and we have to drive 162 there and 162 miles back home again.

Yes we do have a closer MB dealer but we looked for months to find what we thought was our perfect car, and when we found it we were prepared to drive the distance.

We can't help feeling very let down by MB and we will never buy another MB. Utterly utterly disgraceful customer service and lack of knowledge from their sales staff.

That's a bit harsh you may say but it's not the first time we have been let down by MB.

We won't feel really happy until we have our car and all our money back too.

I will let you know when that's happened.

Once again thank you for your kind advice and support.

I hope you get your car sorted too woodman2. xx

At least you can get your money back and now you can take time to choose a replacement. If you are after a car of this size I can recommend the 5 series touring. I had one and the car was excellent for towing. Running costs were very low although they do suffer from rear air suspension failure as the rubber air bags detiriotate.

Mine was 4 years old when this happened but I found genuine replacements at a good price and had them fitted at a local garage.

I have to say though BMW dealers are like Mercedes NOT VERY GOOD.

Update on my situation.
MB today stated on the phone to me

"it was not Mercedes responsibility to advise if a particular model is legally allowed to have a tow bar fitted."

Unbelievable response, so I have E-Mailed the head of PR in the UK to see if he can get an answer.

My last five cars have all been MB. This is the last one.

Very Glad you seem to have got sorted Tabatha.

That's outrageous woodman2. Their sales brochures clearly state their towing capacity.

I just spent the last hour emailing Customer Complaints at Milton Keynes.

Have you looked at Mercedes Benz owners forum?. I have had some excellent advice from members on there. I only joined on Saturday when all this trouble started. Take a look, the guys on there know their stuff.

It looks like i'll be joining the Mercedes Benz former owner forum soon.

We have found Kia and Hyundai to be excellent towcars with long warranties and helpful dealerships.
I have always fancied an SL as a second car, some nice ones about although early ones are classics and can be pricey.

We had a Merc once. Flimsy trim that broke if you sneezed, Starter and alternator failures on a regular basis, items on the service schedule checked off without actually being looking at, a dealer that fobs you off and stalls until the warranty expires and then fitting new parts instead of servicing old at a fraction of the cost.
Shan't be rushing out for another thank you.

Not of much help, sorry, but I have found many car salespersons really lacking knowledge on the product they are selling. To my mind, if you are representing and selling a product, you should have extensive knowledge of that product.

Not wishing to inflate someone’s ego, but honestly, the Skoda Superb Estate is probably the best large estate car out there. Book a test drive, as I did, you will be massively impressed, read the motoring reports, they are all very impressed. Based on the Audi A4/Passat, but better than both.

I don’t own one, but I would have one if I wanted an Estate and the new Kodak is also a stunning vehicle if you want an SUV, I have an SUV at the moment and once you have had an SUV, you will NOT go back, especially if you tow a caravan.

Sorry, but most people have a Mercedes or BMW for the badge, for some reason, but there are far better cars out there for much less money.

Mike I agree with you,we would not tow with anything other than an SUV.
I have met caravanners with Mercedes cars who have said the quality was not as good as it used to be, particularly on some earlier 1990s- 2000 models.

As a classic car fan, I do like the older SL and the boxy saloons ,W123 and 124 models.

These were common when I was serving in Germany with the RAF, built like tanks. Sadly beyond the means of a mere airman at the time!

I second you on the Skoda, brother in law has a Superb estate, its a well made roomy car.He does not tow but its great for carrying grandchild plus buggy, and dog etc.

We are very pleased with our Hyundai, excellent build quality and reliability. Big discounts available too see CMC mag.

Hope the original poster is able to source a suitable replacement.

Sorry OP, a bit off topic.

Dave, I love the older SLs too. I left school in 74 and did my vehicle mechanics apprenticeship on Mercedes Benz, and was test driving 350s and 450s at 18 years old. Cruising along Torquay seafront, roof down.......What a magnet! The car not me 🙁

I would love one ❤️
