The only design flaw is in the owner. It is very basic maintenance to check tyres every few weeks for uneven wear - if its happening across axles it suggests an alignment problem which can be checked out.

If people buy vehicles and don't understand the implications of ownership it will work out expensive for them.

I disagree daveyjp, at least with the bit about it being the fault of the owners. I do agree however with checking the tyres, and the bit about alignment problems, but tyre wear causing transmission problems should simply not be happening in my opinion. It has never been a problem in the past, to my knowledge, and if it's a problem now it is one of design. With modern technology it should be easy to eliminate. I could understand it if someone had fitted 15 inch wheels on one axle and 16 inch on the other, as that would clearly not be what the manufacturer had intended, but a few mm difference in tyre wear causing major transmission problems??? That is just crazy!

My Sorento passed MOT today, but advised again by KIA that I should have the same brand of tyres/ same tread pattern on all 4 wheels, because of the 4 wheel drive.
The front ones are a pair and the rear ones are a pair.
Again they offered to supply 4 new tyres.

I'd certainly accept the offer of 4 new tyres, as long as it's F.O.C of course!

I must say though, I do seriously wonder how much of this is about selling more tyres. I would have thought that in the 21st century it was possible to design a 4WD system that didn't fall apart if one set of tyres was worn a few millimetres more than the other set. Certainly makes me glad my Hyundai Tucson is the 2WD version, not the 4WD.

Does anyone else think that's bad design? I don't think I've ever bought 4 tyres at once on any vehicle I have ever owned, and that's quite a few. Generally I buy one axle at a time, as the fronts normally wear out first, particularly on a FWD vehicle. Occasionally I have even had to replace one tyre due to a puncture. If the other one is nearly new I wouldn't want to have to replace it because otherwise it might wreck the transmission! I certainly wouldn't want to have to replace all 4.

I was lucky with my Kia Sorento the garage we bought it from sorted it out, however it is swings and roundabouts, as said early 110 Landrover with one wheel in mud it could fail to drive with just one wheel spinning.

As I said all cars front wheels must travel further than the back wheels, so having it so if front don't travel as far as back it considers rear wheels slipping seems reasonable.

Other option is get out and engage or disengage free wheels, I will admit I really don't need 4 wheel drive, and other car is 2 wheel drive which means cheaper road tax and more miles per gallon than 4 wheel drive version of same car. (Jaguar XE)

But I like towing with the larger vehicle with higher driving position, ability to carry bikes and tow, and plug in electrics without having to crawl under car to 13 pin socket.

Before changing to Sorento we were on a non hard standing when it decided to rain heavy, we were worried about getting off the site, actually it turned out not to be a problem, it towed off the field without spinning any wheels, however I would have been happier had we had a 4 x 4 as once wheels spin it's too late.

We have no idea how close we were to not getting off, I was clearly careful not to spin wheels, 4 x 4 is just an insurance policy taking some of the worry away, but in real terms likely we will never need it.

Started with caravans in 1955 as a small boy, and be it my dad driving or me, we have never been stuck, but there is always the first time.

I have had Subarus and currently a Skoda 4WD estate, now done 130k miles, I have always kept same tyres on the same axles but not bothered about keeping same front and back, never had a problem with the 4wd transmission.....

I once had a Mazda Bongo with what must have been a similar 4WD setup. It wasn't a selectable 4WD, and it wasn't permanent 4WD. It had some kind of viscous coupling between the front and rear axles.

I don't remember being told anything about tyres on that vehicle, so I just changed those that needed changing when they got too worn. Never swapped fronts for rears, just replaced as required, and I never had any problems with the 4WD system in the 5 years I had it. There must have been times when there was more tread depth on the front than the rear, and vice versa.

We had 2 new front tyres fitted to our 2015 Kia Sorento in August last year by a local tyre fitter, then took it for its MOT to our Kia dealer in late September. Passed the MOT and no mention of the non-matching tyres.

So bofs, when you had the 2 new tyres fitted to the front , could there have been more than 2mm difference berween the front treads and the rear treads?

Well bofs that’s interesting, whenever my local Kia dealer sees my car they always make a point of warning me that more than 2mm diff between front and back could result in serious consequences.

I must admit I am very skeptical about this. If that is correct, it would appear to be a serious design flaw to me. 2mm difference in tyre tread depth could result in damage to the transmission? It would definitely put me off buying such a vehicle, and I'm sure it would put many others off too.

I don't know for certain but I'm sure the transmission on my 4WD Bongo was very similar in design, and there was no problem with that, and nobody even mentioned any tyre issues, apart from not mixing different tyres on the same axle. Even that was nothing to do with transmission issues, more a case of causing handling problems. I wouldn't mix tyres on an axle anyway, even on my current 2WD car.

Then either your dealers are super on-the-ball or ours aren’t! Hard to know which it is.
Have you tried asking at a tyre dealers/fitters to see what their advice would be?

I can’t see how the dealers advice is correct, I’ve never followed this logic over several cars.
The logic makes no sense, if you think about it the wheels are all rotating differently every time you go round a corner.

The dealer repeating this, and not acted on will give them a case to reject any claim for failure of 4WD drive system.

That is quite possible. It's also likely that the dealer wants to sell more tyres too!

I just don't think a vehicle which had such a flaw would sell very well. If I learned that before buying a vehicle, I wouldn't touch it with a barge-pole!
