My wife towed caravans before we got together. I was a happy camper and didnt want a caravan, but couldn't get her in a tent. One day she went out with her parents to a caravan place. She took me there to show me a van. She talked me into buying it. When van was ready and towbar fitted to my car we went to pick the van up. Even the salesmans face was a picture when she got in the drivers seat and drove away with van. I now do more towing than the wife, especially in bad weather and when travelling at night, but i love the looks we get when she is towing and ive got my seat reclined back enjoying the journey. She grew up with her mother towing so it is like second nature to her. I like it even more when i get home from work to find a note like "took the van to such a place dinner and beer will be ready when u get there"

Oh dear what am I going to do!! All you fantastic towing ladies out there! We have just bought our first van and I would really like to learn to tow it - although I never towed the TT or trailer. My husband hates me driving (although I am not a bad driver - he is just a nervous passenger). He says my driving makes him "sick". I have read him all the posts and he is very impressed! He says he will teach me!
We got our first caravan last summer and after much persuassion from hubby I tried towing. Have never looked back. In fact, since we got our new van, Eldiss Superstorm, he has not had a look in.
We went from Wirral to Birmingham in March and I let him tow the last 10 miles!!!! Aren't I kind?
Personally, I feel safer towing than sitting in the passenger seat and then he doesn't get me nagging all the time.
I have actually had compliments on my reversing from campsite owners, then I couldn't get my head out of the door it had got that big from all the compliments!!!!!
Also, when we arrive on site I can say I am too tired to set up and hubby can do it!!!
Hi Binzi. Going forward is very easy. Just add a few inches to each side of the car, take corners wider, drive at the speed you feel comfortable at as long as its not too fast lol. Motorway driving can be a bit unnerving at 1st when the lorries overtake as its like towing in high wind. Best thing to do is get used to A roads and get confidence up. reversing is a different matter altogether. its easy when u get used to it. When my wife and myself got together she was good at towing but not the perfect driver not towing lol. Now she is good at both.

Well, I showed my other half all these postings and although she won't go on a course she will have a go at towing the caravan "somewhere quiet". My father (motorhome addict) has agreed as well. Although I will do the majority of the towing I did explain to my dear wife that it would be nice to know that she could tow the caravan if I suffered some misfortune that prevented me from driving. despite her intial comment to "dump the caravan and run" she is going to have a go so I can't argue with that.
We don't share all the time but i tow when have to. Usually take van truckfest once a year as hubby takes his lorry. Gives him a break as it like a bus mans holiday for him. Took it out last bank hols and he wasn't even home, only going half hour up road and he was going to be late so decided to go myself. Got a friend to help me turn van and hitch up then off i went with kids. Came back for him later when we all set up otherwise would of been late setiing everything up.
Can't reverse but when he wasn't around i was trying to straighten van after getting off drive and thought i did quite well. Can't normally get me head round it but without him nagging and telling me i was able to do it at my own pace and was doing ok.
But doesn't bother me towing had to do it when he hurt his foot once and did ok and he doesn't croticise too much just there for advice when i need it.
I wouldnt Tow our caravan before hell freezes over!! Would rather stay clear and let partner be responsible for the bumps and scrapes!!! that way there wont be any holiday showdowns or divorces!!!!!
MY OH DOES ALL THE TOWING AS I REVERSED OUR CAR INTO SOME FARM EQUIPTMENT JUST AFTER WE HAD TOWBAR FITTED LOL I AM OK GOING FORWARD BUT WOULDNT LIKE TO RISK AS I THINK OUR OUTFIT AND TOWCAR IS TOO BIG BUT SAYING THAT MY OH REVERSED HIS CLASSIC VW BEETLE INTO A BRIGHT YELLOW JCB SO ITS EVEN AT THE MOMENT
The reason that this all came about is because I have just done a Caravan Club Manouvering course and was well impressed with the skill of of the two ladies who took part. It would also be reasurring to know that she could tow just in case I was unable to do so through injury etc.
Both the Caravan Club and the Camping and Caravanning club do these courses - see their websites for more details.Cost was about £65 for the one day course with the caravan club - money well spent!
As my hubby is a lorry driver, when we go out I tend to drive because he's had enough of driving all day/week. It therefore seemed only natural for me to learn to tow the caravan. I was a nervous wreck the first time and didn't particularly like it, but am beginning to get more confident and actually feel uneasy as the passenger when we are towing.
Long journey's I leave to him especially when it involves hills and winding roads. I have yet to master reversing however. I've thought about one of the courses but they don't seem to hold them locally so I may get hubby to teach me. Friends of mine who have been caravanners for years don't tow and can't believe that I do, but I say 'you don't know what you can do until you try' - so go on girls, have a go, you might find out that you can do it better than your other halves
MY OH IS A NEWBIE AT TOWING AND TRIES REVERSING ON SITE PITCHES WHEN EVERYONE HAS GONE AND IS GETTING THE HANG OF REVERSING OR TRY INDUSTRIAL ESTATES ON SUNDAY MORNINGS BUT IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO GET ON COURSE
