Shouldn't thta be the other way around......lying down if I hit it, standing if I missed it??
In all seriousness...I have to negotiate a tight pair of posts and then turn straight away afterwards. As I start the turn and the posts dissapear behind the van, it is only the absence of a scrunching noise that tells me I have cleared them...and Mrs Ulti-Mate of course!

I see your problem !
Is the van a big one? Too large to unhitch and manhadle through the gate? Is the drive flat or sloping the wrongway to make this a possibility. My inclination would be to manhandle it through the gate at least up to the point wher you can see the post in mirrors, then rehitch and do the rest with the car. Its either that or keep practising untill you get the feel for the manouvre.
Another aproach might be to put some markers on the ground to give you a line which you can see out of the window. Or canes in blocks which could indicate the corre t approach line.
Just a few thoughts trying to be practical, after mymickey taking in last post
