I agree that the Sat Nav shows a different speed in fact when using it in my Galaxy the speedo on the car shows 60 mph when the Sat Nav shows it at 55/56mph. I have tried it in my VW Passat company car and the same sort of reading. I think this could be one of the reasons (as earlier post) why it appears some caravans ' appear' to be passing fast. There are many caravans I see on the motorway only doing about 50mph.from my reading on the Sat Nav., if they are crusing at what they think is about 55, their true speed could possibly be less. Could that be why some people think they are being passed at 70? If the passing caravan is travelling at a true 60 they think it is passing at a faster speed than it actually is?

I fully agree with car speedo's being set slower than the actual speed being done. When we are on a motorway whilst towing, I set the cruise control to 60mph on the sat nav. I do not then have to worry about what speed we are doing. My car returns 34mpg at this speed whilst towing, and is also very steady. Yes, we do overtake a lot of vans whilst on a motorway. We see a lot of vans being towed at slower speeds that are swaying all over the place. More needs to be done about weight ratios and I would also say that stabilisers should be compulsary if the ratio is broken, which can be done legaly if you passed your test before 1997.

Hi All

Having drove up from Isle Of Wight through the night.

I was overtaken by at least 6 caravans doing well in excess of 70mph not only will they add to statistics and speeding coffers, but if it all went wrong what expense would it be to us sensible towers in Insurance and other hidden stealth taxes.

As for the HGV's  95% of the vehicles on the road last night were HGV's.  All were curtious, flashing me in or giving me a wide berth when passing, allowing me onto motorways etc.

I can only speak as I find but I have come across more stupid and rude caravan towers than I have hgv drivers.................

and no I dont drive wagons.

I have to agree, I find HGV drivers to be by far the most courteous and considerate on the roads. Not necessarily the case when they get out of the cab, unfortunately.

If a caravan doing a true 60 was to pass me when I am travelling at about 56 (showing 60 on my speedo) it would take quite a few seconds to pass me. They don't, they whizz past.

It's funny but i found it was the same for me until i put tom tom on my pda and put it in my car.

I found that when my speedo was showing 60 mph my sat nav said i was only doing 54mph

I have tested this a few times using cruise control and it works every time.

My car is a 2004 mondeo ghia tdci not an old car by any means.

I am told that the gps is more acurate than most cars speedo's

Hope that helps

Rgds
