Simon - I have seen some VERY optimistic figures on here! Yours is about on a par with our Saab. 150 bhp, Sentronic 'box (has the 'slush' torque converter so some loss there) we get between 25 & 30 to the gallon towing depending on the wind direction, cruise set to 65 as soon as we are on open roads. Solo can get as high as 51-52 but that is driving like Miss Daisy, ie at about 65mph. Solo with cruise set at 80 gives us about 45-47.
I am happy with the towing figure, although the previous Saab, a manual, used to give us about 33-34. However, I just love the relaxed driving with the auto quite apart from the benefit for me (bad arthritis left ankle)

I'm just back from a trip to Pwllheli, on the way there i managed 31.8 mpg but i took it extremely easy. We set off pretty early and the wind seemed non existent, the estimated arrival time was about 11am so i decided to take it easy at about 52mph as we could only check in at 12. On the way back i stuck to the speed limit and did 60mph on the mways all the way back (where permitted) however with the slight speed increase the mpg went down to 29mpg.
Solo our car gets between 46-52mpg max, for a big (ish) car i'm pretty impressed with the mpg both towing and solo. After taking my B&E test at the end of June in my LWB Renault Trafic van i was dreading using the car to tow, i was under the impression that the car would be far more difficult to tow with. However apart from the riding height the car seems a far more stable outfit. I'm so impressed that i almost hate driving the car without the caravan on the back!! The auto powershift gear box with the 163bhp make it a dream tow car ! (to me anyway)
