The Roomster is only available as a 1.2 petrol auto which has a max tow of 900kg or so and therefore not suitable.

I am aware that engines are getting smaller but I am worried that 105bhp is not enough to cope with a loaded car and a 1300kg caravan. Our caravan is under 1200kg and I turned away from a lot of 105bhp diesels because I didn't want to be that car holding up traffic because it wasn't really powerful enough.

The op is looking to change their caravan so wants to be able to tow about 1300kg in the future. Trying to find a car that fits the budget and is comfortable is not as easy as you might think especially as it's not easy to get a test drive in the correct vehicle.

Hi Rob and Tina
I would think the car i have now could easy tow your caravan .
It towed mine at 58/60mph in 7 speed DSG/AUTO Box
2012 Seat Altea Xl SE TDI 1.6 105bhp DSG 7 SPEED 5 Door.
In the brochure it says it can tow about 1500kg
Regards Phil

Thanks Phil. I think I am being over cautious because I am used to towing with 140bhp and a weight ratio of less than 70%. I'll see how I get on with 115bhp and 86% and bear your experience in mind next time we change car. I also think that the auto box makes towing much easier and I'm going to miss that but at least I've got cruise control again.

We've got a Focus 1.6 estate with the 115bhp engine, this has a manual box and a hand clutch conversion so works out much cheaper than the auto model. We haven't tried towing yet so I still don't know if I made the right choice. The 50mpg I'm getting at the moment is a nice bonus.

I've often thought about the Altea but the dealer is not that convenient to get to so that has put me off. I think the Seat range is quite interesting and I'd consider one next time we change.

RESULT!!

Eventually managed to get a Vauxhall motability extended test drive organised for the Astra elite estate - Auto. Just have to hope it is going to be suitable. The £399 A/P would be great.
Ruled out the Octavia, Volvo and undecided about the golf as I was a passenger and it was borderline ok. Going for a test drive in the C4 picasso as as the 115hp is available for the same as the 90hp but the A/P is £995 so at the top end of what I was hoping for. In the past the citroen suspension has suited so I feel there is some progress but no final decision. If the C4 is better than the Astra and the Golf I will just have to restrict any future caravan puchase to the 1100kgs or there about even though it has the towing capability of 1600kg. I need my car as I would be housebound without it and my comfort is paramount.
Appreciate all the help and advice given.

Hi, I wondered how you were getting on. You are back to the shortlist I had at the end of last year with the Astra and Picasso. The Astra AP is cheaper but the Picasso is cheaper to run so you break even after 10000 miles or so. We liked the Picasso but found it wasn't as comfortable as we had hoped also I don't know if there is a tow bar available yet, Witter still don't list one. The Picasso will tow 1200kgs so that would include caravans such as our Bailey Ranger and a lot of Lunars so it wouldn't restrict your choice of new caravan too much.

How's it going ladyfidi? The end of the month and the new price list are getting close now. Have you managed to drive those cars yet?

The Touran is from £1399 AP for the 1.6 and £2999 AP for the 2.0 so it's quite a long way over budget otherwise I would have suggested it earlier. Strangely it is only £1499 AP for a 2.0 4WD Tiguan at the moment, I just can't work out how the costings work on some cars as I would expect the Tiguan to be much dearer for servicing.

Indeed the pricings are not always in accordance with the veichles market value. We have a friend who recently passed his driving test, is 26yrs old, so high insurance costs, is an inexperianced driver, yet Motability allow him to choose the VW Tiguan with a high power engine as his very first car, and let him drive off the forecourt within 7 days of passing his test with 'P' plates on.

This scares me, a hike of over 1000cc from the driving schools car and given to a bit of a 'boy racer' who has not got the driving experiance under his belt to apprieciate what such a car can do if not handled with due respect. Some of Motability's cars are indeed unavailable to anyone under 25, regardless of driving ability or experiance, so why is such a high powered car such as the Tiguan available to a brand new driver who is just a year older?

Sorry for the rant, but this scares me, this lad has had a tough life growing up as it is, and l am scared he may have an accident the way things are at the moment, he doesnt appear to recognise the danger that speed can cause.

Julia

Julia

There has to be a cut off somewhere so it is just at the age of 25.
At least he has passed his test, as there is also no problem with him being a learner and still having same car
