Lots of cars have a max tow weight heavier than the kerbweight but this is not recommending that you should tow a trailer of that weight or that it would be safe to do so.
Most brochures that list the weights have something like this printed at the bottom of the page :

"The maximum towing weights are based on the ability
of the car, with two occupants of 75kg each, to restart on a 12% gradient, which is approximately 1 in 8.3, at sea level."

The important bit above is that the car can pull away on a slope not that it could stop a trailer of that weight safely. The safest thing for everybody is to stick to guidelines based on the vehicle kerbweight and not exceed the kerbweight.

Bob my caravan actually weight 130 kgs heavier than the car ?? I'd love to see this claim in writing from Skoda ?
Bob if you were so confident in the skodas ability why have you always gone for the lightweight van ? And not a all singing dancing heavyweight,
I'd be more interested to see what it actually weight on a weigh bridge.
Don't get me wrong I think the new superb looks great, I just can't believe it's as light as it claims. No wonder its good on fuel its almost 300 kgs lighter than my car

Best thing is to go into a dealership and ask.
Or phone 03330037504 and ask to speak to John Good, of Skoda UK

Hi Bob

With the greatest of respect mate

The Discovery 3 pulled 200 ton +( i admit it was a train on rails lol, and a stunt) would it do it on a highway and is it safe Noooo                                                                                                                         It went up a mountain in wales, if you tried it and had no experiance in off roading you be dead.                                                                                                                  Other cars like a V70, XC90, X5 & a Skoda, and many other makes that members on here drive, may also manage the above, 4x4 or not.                                                   The point that members are trying to get across is, what ever the car & regardless of make, the question as to be asked.

Is it safe to do that, in my opinion No.

I know the 85% is not law but it is common sence, and has worked as a guide line well for many years.                                                                                                     So Skoda in my view (and any other car maker with the same type of  statement) is given out the right advice that it can tow this weight, but can it tow it safely.                  I doubt it.

I would be more inclined to listen to the manufacturers, who will have tested their vehicles and tow up to 85% of their stated braked towing weights on the log book.
The kerb weight now looks well out of date as a guideline for towing, if manufacturers state diferently

There is a world of difference in pulling a flat bed, 2 ton trailer, and towing a brick shaped 2 ton caravan.
Head winds, tail winds and cross winds affect the towing much more.

As my HGV mate stated, "It's one thing towing it, and another thing stopping it"

Stick to 85%, or up it a bit if very comfortable and experienced.

Dog wagging tail good. Tail wagging dog not good.

Right Bessie, had a phone call from Skoda, you all can forget kerb weights, the towing capacity is now on the V5 log books, you can now go by if you must 85% of what it states, the new Superb 2ltr diesel 150 bhp has a towing capacity of 2000 kg, so as long as your under that your ok, nose weight 90 max.
I did state that some are worried about going over the kerb weight, he said that as long as you stick to the V5 weights nobody should have any problems, all manufacturers now do this due to big advances in technology and being able to make vehicles lighter so they are more fuel efficient when solo.

Best thing is to go into a dealership and ask.
Or phone 03330037504 and ask to speak to John Good, of Skoda UK.

Just spoke to skoda UK Bob & all they could quote was the figures straight out of the brochure, no mention of advancing technologies and cars getting better with more powerful engines. just straight figures that are printed in every manufactures brochures.

it would be interesting to get some feed back from the caravan club on this thread, large cars suitable for towing large heaver vans are getting rarer, and the old trusted guide lines on sticking to 85% is going to get more difficult as the years pass.
Mk1 superb 2.5 v6 1720kg kerb 155bhp
mk2 superb 2lt    1640   kerb 170bhp
both figures on a accredited public weighbridge

Hi

Found this on practical caravan,

 http://www.practicalcaravan.com/blog/31998-what-makes-a-good-tow-car

Just the same as this thread has been. I agree with darthillcat, that it would be intresting to find out what veiw the CC & CCC have on this topic..

As i have said the Skoda can tow this weight. and we are going to see more of this going forward.

I am quite serious about this, but we have all been living in a world of received wisdom that is unreal when it comes to outfit matching.

Kerb weight, and 85% "rule/guide" are totally irrelevant when outfit matching.

The three figures that are a MUST to match an outfit are the actual weight of your 'van; the manufacturers "max drawbar loading" (ie the max down force allowable on the coupling head WHICH SHOULD NOT BE EXCEEDED. This is the max "noseweight" allowable.) and the max tow weight WHICH SHOULD NOT BE EXCEEDED.

Given (I believe) that max drawbar loading for Superb is 85KG and that your 'van should be balanced to give a noseweight of between 4% and 7% of the weight of your van.
Then the question we need to ask is to match our outfits is "What weight of 'van balanced to between 4% and 7% will give a nose weight not exceeding 85kg?". Or put another way "7% / 4% of what = 85"

The arithmetic is simple for anybody that can do percentages.

In this example, at 4% noseweight:
85 divided by 4, times 100, gives a 'van weight of 2125kg
or at 7%:
85 divided by 7, times 100 = gives a 'van weight of 1214kg

As long as the figure derived does not exceed the manufacturers specified tow limit (Which 2125kg might do in this instance) this is a match.

Do this for your vehicle using my method by substituting your vehicles Max drawbar loading figure. (Typical figures are 60kg, 75kg, 85kg and 4x4s will probably be 100/120kg)

Johnjory, the new superb,s nose weight is 90KG max

max weight of car 2045, max tow 2000, so anything under that like EG 1600 kg max, would be well within the capability's of the vehicle
That's my understanding from John Good, who also explained that the towing limits where on the V5.
Bessie was told more or less the same thing when they told her to refer to the broacher, the figures are for the 2ltr tdi 150 bhp new version of the superb.
one thing I would never do is load the tow ball to the max, our van is quite happy at 55kg nose weight, even though our mark 2 twin boot version can be loaded to 85 kg

Thanks for that Bob, I was illustrating that the safe towing calculation should be a properly balanced 'van where the nose weight does not exceed the max drawbar loading specified for the tow vehicle.

Hi Bob Skoda just confirmed the kerbweight and max tow weight of the car, so no use at all. Fact of the matter is most cars have a tow weight far heavier than the kerbweight, but you would have to be seriously stupid to consider towing a caravan that was heavier than your car ? Let's face it your caravan could just turn into a 25 ft sail that would throw you all over the motorway at any given time.

P.s I,m also a bloke not a women

Hi Bessie500, whilst your point has merit in as much as there is clearly an limit as to what you can safely tow, please put aside opinion for a moment and consider the outfit matching calculation method I suggested above.
