I have always gone by the 85% up to 100% for experienced towers. This is set out by the Caravan club but how did they come by this figure, did a few people get together and say this sounds about right or did they do some sort of testing ? Why do manufactures state a higher maximum towing load after all an articulated lorries trailer is way higher than it's tractor unit, it's a braked trailer same as a caravan.
Anyway I pick my new Skoda Superb up tomorrow.

Bessie, go and find a dealer who has a tow bar fitted and go and try it, you're that old school you're afraid of your own shadow.
Manufacturers would be breaking the law if they quoted unrealistic figures, after all they have tested their vehicles, and are more qualified to know than us mere mortals

You will find it a very satisfying car to drive solo and a very capable tow car. Enjoy!

Bob why does everyone work between 85% and 100% of a cars kerbweight ( not just me), as for being scared of my shadow, Bob I have no fear of towing my outfit that's why I do thorough checks to ensure that my match is good and that my family are safe, I do also hold a hgv class 1 license as well so ability wise.... I can hold my own, Bob the last I recall was your van was parked down in Cornwall and you just drove down for your holidays is that still the case, or have you finally grown a pair and started to tow it around now

maybe if the likes of skoda got practical caravan and the two main clubs to test and recommend a maximum safe towing weight for all their vehicles us mere mortals might believe the figures quoted, how many times have sales people ,including skoda's just spouted the top figures from the brochures.I had a sales man at the kings lynn dealership tell me it was perfectly ok to tow 2 tonne with a skoda yeti 4x4 ,there is no way I would use a car that light to tow a trailer of 2 tons.

Yes its still down there Bessie, for the simple reason its cheaper to keep it down there, £24 a month, than bring it up and down from Scotland, a round trip of 880 miles saves around £100 in fuel a trip, especially when we get mid 60s solo on a long run, or 700 miles before a filling station beckons, and go down at least 10 times a year, so the savings alone pay the pitch fees and nearly everything else

I thought as much so you offer advice but don't actually tow yourself

So my question to you is would you tow a caravan that is 130 kg heavier than your cars kerbweight with all your family in the car ??

Just a simple yes or no ??

You are joking, yes.

XVI yes?

As well is two words!

Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.

YES, kerb weights stand for nothing, on modern vehicle's its now power to weight that applies, and as for towing I have towed all over the world, being in the MT while in the army, and a chieftain tank weights more than the low loader

Bob you can't compare with that mate, a tractor unit towing that weight is far better than any car you can buy anywhere today. And made for the job in hand.

That's great Bob I wish you all the luck in the world with that,
why don't you get a 1.4 golf as your next towcar thats got plenty more towing capacity than you'll ever need.

Just an update, picked Superb up beginning of August and spent the next few weekends driving it about to get some miles on before I towed with it. Just got back from Cornwall yesterday having towed with it. I am well pleased with it, more stable than the Cr-v effortless on the motorway had to watch speed creeping up. The test came on those steep inclines on A30, it performed equally as well if not better than the CR-V(and that was remapped). Solo it's a pleasure to drive and very economical.

Agri, all I can say is I hope your Superb behaves as well as mine did.

2.0 140hp Elegance Hatchback, 6sp DSG, Cruise and all the toys.

50+ solo on short trips, 65+ mpg long trips solo, high 30's towing a Bailey Senator, effortless, comfortable, quiet, under £200/yr on servicing and soo smug grinning at all the Audi/VW/BMWs looking down their noses at the badge.

Best towcar I ever had since 1985.

Enjoy :-)
