Bottom line here is, no one is going to buy an EV for towing a caravan. End of.

Yep, but it's not all about just towing caravans, but I would not say never, there is a video of someone towing a boat for a good distance with a Tesla Model X, so a small caravan is quite possible.

I would love an electric car, just as a run-about, but I can neither afford a car just as a run-about, nor can I afford an electric car, and I suspect I am in a large majority with that.

The fact remains that an ICE car can do 300- 400 miles without refuelling and without any loss of power. It can refuel in a few minutes, and do it all again, repeatedly. No electric car comes close to that yet, not even the Tesla. Maybe it will in time, who knows, but that time isn't yet.

In my opinion, electric cars are still very much a niche-market, and will remain so for quite a while. Until they can match or exceed every aspect of an ICE car, they will never become mainstream. They will also need to come down in price dramatically.

Colin 21 that's my line of work I have to set the rv's on commercial vehicles as well as sell them, if we get it wrong in the front end it can be horrendous on the back end.
Look at it this way teslas are a luxury brand car a car that cost 30k + now is at least 35k in 3/4 years time, then look at the running cost which is 0 this has to make it the biggest demand second hand car out their, most people's mileage is 50 miles tops a day so battery life is fine , if you had to stop on s long journey to charge your battery up well that's a small price to pay for free running.
I can assure you the second hand value will be rally strong , only time will Tell

Bessie

With all due respect, you are dealing with current products that have been around a long time, whereas electric cars are a very new concept to most people. They are very much an unknown quantity, except possibly in the trade.

As for "free running costs", doesn't electricity cost anything? It may cost less than petrol at the moment, but it certainly isn't free. As an ordinary customer I would be very concerned about the cost of replacement batteries, and how frequently they would need replacing. That alone would be enough to put me off, much as I like the idea. Even if I could easily afford one, I wouldn't even contemplate it as a tow-car. Not yet anyway. In decades to come it may be different, but that would be my children and grandchildren's decision. I doubt I'll still be around by then.

I predict that folks in jobs like mine will all be driving E.V.'s come 2020, which is not that far of.

Our staff typical do around 150 miles each day, many do less and very few do more.

Using E.V.'s would save the firm I work for spending £288,000 each year on Diesel as there are around 80 cars in the fleet.

Each driver would be better of by £800 each year due to the reduce E.V. company car BIK tax that we all pay.

It really is a no brainer, and I would be shocked and stunned, if I am not driving a CC E.V. within the next 4 years.

As mentioned before it would not be by my choice, as I am quite happy to continue driving a VW Diesel Golf, that costs me next to nowt, and I only have to fill it up once each week, rather than put it on charge every day.

What you say makes sense, Francais, but I feel that politics, vested interests, and big business may well intervene.

Anything that threatens the profits of the oil giants will be met with huge resistance, and the government will cooperate. In my opinion, if it wasn't for this we could have had electric vehicles decades ago.

I suspect the ability to tow a caravan is pretty far down on the list of the manufacturers design requirements or intended customer base. The vast majority of sales will be to the fleet markets rather than private buyers.

The pressure to come up with an alternative to fossil fuelled cars is very high.

Touring caravans will have to change as well. I honestly think folding is the only way they will be able to survive in which case, electric cars will be well able to tow them. The huge wind resistance of a full height van is a killer.

Yep navver, Tesla are working on a Trailer that is self powered, think they call it vectoring or something.

The idea is that the Trailer platform could be used for any type of unit caravan included, as it will have it's own battery pack and drive unit.

So the E.V. towcar is not having it's range reduced etc.

Of course the cost will no doubt be prohibitive at first, but it could be another step along the way for electric power, you do have to admire thier vision though.

A lot will have to change as the years roll on, Navver. You are probably right in what you say. However, it will probably take quite a long time.

How long will the caravans being built today last? There are plenty over 20 years old still giving good service. Ours is 28 years old, and we are going away with it again very soon.

Well just discovered that there is a Tesla showroom local to me at Stockport, so I guess it would be rude of me not to pay them a visit!

Colin your right most of the time it's the same products, but we also deal with bespoke equipment that need a 5 7 & 10 year rv.
As for free electric if I had one I'd charge it at work all the time. I'm in the same boat as Francais with a cc, this is were the majority of the second hand cars will filter from

Also someone mentioned trailers, a certain well known haulier is currently trailing a hgv trailer with a driven middle axle, power supplied by batteries that self charge.

That's handy, Bessie, being able to charge up at work.

The idea of a trailer with a powered axle sounds like a great one. How would the batteries charge? Off the truck's alternator presumably. Control linked in to the truck's accelerator? Interesting!

I mentioned to the boss at work if he thought that we would be going over to E.V.'s and I mentioned the £300k in fuel savings, and there are sure to be govt kick backs for the firm going to E.V.'s, he laughed and commented, that I was not looking at the bigger picture, the firm has over 80,000 employees spread over 90 countries and spends £1 million each day on R&D yes each day!

A saving of £300k over a year, is diddle squat in the great scheme of things he went on to say, to put things in perspective the firm will spend more than £300k on a weekend corporate event, as they sponsor F1 and Man United, and that's just in the UK.

Of course if you were to extrapolate my figure to the whole of the company, then the savings would be significant, so maybe my boss was also not looking at the bigger picture!

And then of course there is the politics of it all, as ever things are never as straight forward as you often think, when there are huge corporate companies involved.

Francais your right with politics, it was the case that we could have a top of a range ford or vw, but couldn't have a bmw or Audi even though the cars were cheaper and the rv is better. That's all changed now I could of had a 4 series bmw for cheaper than my Mondeo, so you see companies do change it took for us to be bought out by the Chinese to eventually change.

Colin I'm not 100% how it works the tractor unit has a box that sends a signal the the electric motor and this gets it going, the fuel cells is a bed of batteries between the I beams they recharge them self ghrough inertia, the middle axle has a prop from the motor and this powers it, I think it weighed about 750 kgs more than a standard set up and the return they are hoping for is a 3 mpg improvement on the tractor unit.
The axle vould also be swapped to a different trailer at the end of the trailers life. I'm not sure if my figures are 100% correct but I'm probably not a million miles out.
