If you already own the car surely you can check the weight plate which is usually just inside the door and the V5 and these should give you all the information you need. Any information we give you may be incorrect but if a problem should arise the figures on your vehicle and documents will be the ones that VOSA rely on.

If you cannot find correct handbook or brochure online & I assume you don't have car handbook then you can only go by info on plate under bonnet & V5. This should at least give you max train weight, ie max weight of car+trailer & also max gross, ie loaded weight of car, subtract one from 'tother to give tow weight which will be correct unless lower tow weight stated but I think 1300kg is probably correct.

If you are pulled in check when towing & weighed all they will go on is train weight & axle weights all of which will be on car plate if no further info is available.

Thanks Rob, Tina  and RogerGoff, Roger i like what your saying and might be a good way of arguing the toss if i carnt find out the info i'm looking for. My main argument is the same thing Andy mentions on page 1

(I have a Grand Scenic 1.9 diesel, and although the quoted maximum tow weight is 1300 Kg, the issue is the Gross Train Weight (i.e. total weight of car + caravan + contents of both including passengers).

Your weights may be slightly different, but for my 1.9 Grand Scenic, the car weighs 1530Kg and the GTW is 3050Kg. So with your van, your total weight of car + van is 2830. This gives you only 220Kg for all your passengers (inc driver) and any additional car contents (bikes, spare tyres?), which is not much.

We bought a Bailey Ranger 470/4 which is 967Kg unladen, so we would keep well within this Gross Train Weight figure. I calculated on a spreadsheet that we'd need a van of unladen weight under 1000Kg in order to be able to accommodate luggage, contents etc within the weight limits. Note that is illegal to exceed teh Gross Train Weight, and your insurance would be invalid in an accident, and possibly the car warranty also invalidated as a result.

To confuse it further, the Renault manual says that the 1300 figure is for the car with driver only, and that in "all other situations" (i.e. with passengers) the maximum tow is 850Kg. I have a letter from Renault which confirms that this is not the case as long as you don;t exceed the Gross Train Weight.

Performance wise, we had our first trip out this weekend - and I was very impressed with the rowing capabilities - good power, 25mpg, and rock steady. However, I would wonder whether the 1,5 engine is a little underpowered, especially if you're going for a heavier van.

Sorry it will not let me highlight the bit i want, paragraph 5 on my last post.

How can it change so much even if you put 1 passenger in the car?? and as someone else on page 1 says they managed to get a letter correcting the weights to cover them but what RogerGoff stated is a good arguement. just would of liked something documented the handbook only states 1300kg with driver only 850kg with even 1 person in the car hope that clears what my concern is? thanks again.

What is the gross train weight on the plate? What is the max laden weight on the plate?

Assuming that the car is fully loaded the max trailer weight is calculated by subtracting the max laden weight from the gross train weight. This will probably give you a figure lower than 1300kg for the trailer, however you can tow a heavier trailer (up to 1300 kg) as long as the gross train weight is not exceeded. If you look at the weights in the back of a Scenic brochure it usually explains this (it's usually right at the back of the brochure).

If you were to be checked by VOSA they would rely on the plated gross train weight when they weigh the outfit.

If you can tell us what the weight plate says we should be able to check this all out for you.

I tow almost 1200kg with a 1.6 Ford diesel and I wouldn't want to tow much more than that and our car only has 2 of us in it, not a large family and all the extras.

The only weights on the plate reads like this.
     2140 Kg
     3000 Kg
1 - 1130Kg
2 - 1230Kg

Exactly as shown I know the 2 lowest equal the top but that does not help a lot??
Renault hummmm but stuck with it. hence I want to know the true FACT on what weight I can tow.
Thanks again for all your help.

I towed with a 2002 Renault scenic dynamyque 1800cc petrol and found it towed my pennine Pullman 1000kg max pretty well until I came to hills and unless it got a good run at the hill it became very sluggish, however when it came to telegraph hill in devon which is a long drawn out hill it was absolute rubbish had to pull in and start off again two thirds up the hill so definitely underpowered, I now have a 2.2 litre antara and tows like a dream.

Thanks for the weights.

The two weights at the bottom of the plate are the max axle loadings.

The top weight of 2140 is the max loaded weight of the car, the second weight of 3000 is the gross train weight which must never be exceeded.

When the car is fully loaded the max trailer (or caravan) weight is 3000-2140=860kg. However, according to Renault brochures etc, if the car is not loaded to the max you can tow a heavier trailer (up to 1300kg) as long as you do not exceed the gross train weight of 3000kg.

So in reality your choices will be fairly limited. How many berths do you need? You may be able to find an older, but still good, caravan that will fall in with the weight requirements as most newish vans will be too heavy for you. Beware also of sellers that quote the empty weight (MIRO) rather than the max weight (MTPLM) which is the weight you are interested in.

If a caravan is not possible for you have you considered a folding camper which would give you some of the benefits of the caravan but would be lighter to tow?

Rob

My Renault handbook quoted
kerb weight excluding driver   1290kg
front 785
rear   560

max permissible all up weight    1815
max permissible towing unbraked 680
max permissible towing braked driver only 1350
other cases 1050

total train weight 2800
permissible noseweight 65

all kg

there was only ever the wife and I and some food and clothing waste hog and thetford toilet in the car and the aquaroll and pots/pans/cutlery/tins and cleaning stuff in the camper.

hope this helps as said in previous post the car was simply not strong enough on hills which was a shame as otherwise it was a good car.

Thanks everyone, I'm going to work on gross train weight for now but still going to challenge this further with Renault. Have a merry Xmas and a happy New Year. Davey
