I have had my Sorrento XS auto for 3 months now and have travelled 1200 miles, some of it towing. I am getting 18/20 mpg while towing but only about 25 mpg when solo. Is it because it is new and will matters improve or is this the honest consumption and not what the brochure says? Agzy

Sorry but Kia's published figures are completley false,   I remember the Sedona I used to have and that did about half the MPG it said in the spec

I get 32 solo dropping to about 24 towing, but mines an 03 XE. chipped to get the best performance out of her !!

I'm a member of a sorento forum and its generally accepted that the book figures dont match up with reality, but it should get better, if you want to know the addy of the forum just give me a holler, everything you need to know about the sorrie.

'Bout as good as it gets I'm afraid agzy,I manage on average 19-21 when towing and 24-26 solo,as mentioned Kia's claimed figures are way off the scale.I put up with the mpg just for the ease of towing my Bailey Pageant Bretagne and anything else I may buy in the future.

Last year I was seriously considering a Sorrento, so every time I saw one on-site, I would ask the owner about fuel consumption. One chap said "about 17mpg" then added "solo"! Another claimed mid-thirties but the majority said high-teens to low-twenties when towing, mid-twenties solo. Looking into things further, it seems that the XE version with manual transmission can give figures not too far away from the official ones, but the XS, which is in permanent 4-wheel drive unlike the XE, has considerably heavier fuel consumption, especially so with an automatic gearbox.

As I need cruise-control on long trips (another story), I would have had to have bought an XS, but ruled it out because of the fuel consumption.

We tow a abbey 418 1500Kg. with my wifes 2006 shogun warrior 3.2 auto. The published MPG was 28 to 32. Driving at 40 carefully round the lanes here it can get to 28 but mainly is 26. Towing back from the easter break at 60 19mpg and up more carefully 21MPG 300 mile run. Auto adds 2 MPG air con 2 MPG and cruse about 1MPG I think. Driving with care on the old right foot we can get 21/22 MPG. Her Freelander td4 2001 did 24/26 towing and 30/32 solo. I have looked often at the figures published for various tugs and wondered how they get there, now we know they lie! Best tug we have had was a Landrover Defender SWB 1997 that returned 30 MPG towing at any speed. But it leaked, went rusty, kept breaking down and was very noisy and hot. No AC. I am growing to belive that this Shogun is far better than it is sometimes painted. Had it 12 months now. Not a cough, or fault of any form. Tows like a dream, up hill and down dale in 5 all the way. 195BHP mod. The only SWB real tug on the market and the new one 2007 has 2 mpg more for a Comon Rail. Think we will keep it and stop wondering if the MPG is low.  Regards

Peter.
