I will shortly be having a towbar fitted to my new vehicle and have been looking at the merits of a dedicated 12N socket. I've never had any problem with a traditional socket connected by Scotchlocks but wondered if the dedicated electrics are worth the extra money.

Does anyone have any experience of these?

With some newer cars using scotchlocks can play merry havoc with the existing electrical system. Also using a dedicated plug in system is much easier to fit, no accidentaly wiring the brake lights to the indicators etc, less trim panels to pull off to get to the existing loom, is less likely to fail over time due to vibration or corrosion, and if the car already has a well thought out wiring loom and the legally required trailer warning system there is no need to mess around with extra beepers, bulb failure bypasses etc, one plug versus messing around with a test probe and ripping out half the rear end trim? No contenst for me!

i fitted my own towbar (witter) and used a dedicated wiring kit , really easy to fit and no worry about interfering with ECU or light monitoring system fitted to new vehicles ! no cutting wire or scotchlock ! just plug and go !

fitted and working in lest then 30 mins ! i would never pay to have another towbar fitted again , knowing how easy it is to do it yourself.

Thanks for the replies. I've been looking at the fitting instruction for a Witter towbar and it's looks pretty straightforward to fit.

The dedicated electrics also look easy although I think that there is a cable that has to be routed to the dashboard area on my car (Kia Sportage).
