Hi, just bought a 2005 caravan and have just been on a short break with it and when I reverse it on level ground it is fine but when I reversed up a slight incline the brakes seemed to lock on a bit and the car struggled to reverse which caused my cars clutch to start smelling also.

Can you please help with any suggestions or answers.

Thanks

Mark

You might find when stopping on a down slope, the brake is already on. If you roll foreward a bit this releases it a bit, then you can reverse. If not, try , van handbreak on, move car foreward, handbrake off and try again. It works for me.

Sounds as though your brakes or overrun need adjusting. If it hasn't been serviced within the last 12 months, you might be better to book it in for a service and let them know what's happening.

Mark,

Do you have one of these fitted by any chance? if so, sometimes when you reverse the arm can hit the caravan "A" frame brake handle and pull on the caravan brakes.

Mark,

You can get an offset version of the above, but instead i just pull up the Alko Handle slightly.

Mine does the same. If I try to reverse up a hill the brakes come on. It's fine on the level and the brakes operate correctly when going forwards. It was quite a steep hill I tried to reverse up, so assumed this was normal. Maybe I do have a problem after all. I have the standard alco hitch with no stabiliser, although I do use the blade type.
