Recently got Bosal removable towbar professionally fitted to 1999 modeo 2.0 l hatchback. My little Rapido looked rather "nose up" .I then came across the EC 35 to 42 cm height legislation and checked my setup - its 50 cm from ground to centre of towball. I put 2 people in the boot to "load" it and this only lowered it to 46 cms. Bosal checked their part numbers and told me to check with my fitter. My fitter says it's fitted the only way it can be and might be the car. My garage says the car's standard. Where do I go now?

CC say that according to BS AU 113c,Iso 1103 or EC 94/20 that the towball height should be between 350mm and 420 mm measured from the ground to the towball centre with car fully laden but no caravan attached. You need a bit more than two people in the back of the car to make the Mondeo fully laden if I remeber correctly my Mondeo needs about 500kg on top of the kerbweight for it to be fully laden. I would suspect that your 46cm with two passengers on board would be about right. To be honest I have never measured my Mondeos towball height but I will do so tomorrow, but whatever it is I shall not be grumbling it does such a fantastic job of towing my van.

Thanks for your input people. I've just been on to trading standards and they've asked me to check with the CC 1) whether the EC directive is actually British Law and 2) whether they would expect that a company advertising as towbar fitters would be expected to abide by the directive (or law) or should I as a consumer have been savvy enough to specify the height at time of ordering. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that the Rapido needs a towball to be near the bottom of the range to be level when hitched.

We shall see .................
