Hi all. We have a six year old Abbey 416, i was just wondering what kind of tyre pressures we should run it at. I pull it with a discovery if that makes any difference. Thanks in advance. Jim.

Only the maximum pressure and maximum load is printed on the side of any tyre, however from this you can calculate your vans correct tyre pressure for the tyre fitted.

Although the two pressures quoted above are widely apart, both could be correct if  tyres of different construction are fitted to the same weight van.

So the answer to the question is to first find out what the maximum weight of the van is. Next is to check that the tyres fitted are in good condition with no cracks in the side walls or between the tread pattern and that they are less than seven years old at the very most, five would be better. Also that the tyres are matching, you cannot use odd tyres.

Assuming all the above is ok, then find the maximum load and maximum pressure from the side wall and add the two or four tyres maximum loads together.

Now multiply the vans maximum weight by one tyre pressure and divide it by the sum of the tyre load

eg. single axle van maximum weight 1350kg, tyres 730kg at 65psi

1350 x 65 / (2x730) or 1460 = 60psi

Thanks for the info it says 65psi on tyres but it seems excessive but 40psi only seems to inflate them to 3/4

Tyre pressures stated on sidewall markings are not recommended running pressures - they are maximum inflation pressures.

PLEASE DO NOT USE THE ADVICE ABOVE TO SET YOUR TYRE PRESSURES!

MICHELIN TYRE PLC state in their "Tyre fitment and pressure guide (car 2006)" FOR GOOD HANDLING OF THE CAR AND TRAILER PACKAGE:

"Car fitted with MICHELIN radial tyres:
Increase the pressure in the rear tyres by 6psi(0.4 bar) when "cold", in relation to the normal inflation pressure for everyday use, unless the rear tyre pressure for "fully laden" or "speed" use is already more than 6psi (0.4 bar) higher. In this case, use the higher pressure.

Pressure in the caravan or trailer tyres:
If the manufacturer does not state recommended pressures, inflate to 3.0 bars cold"

3.0 bar is 43.5psi.

Contact the trailer or caravan manufacturer, or talk to experts at:

not sure I understand you, I know Dart's are not very heavy, are you saying you have used the calculation and it gives 40psi?
