I have been looking at buying a 4x4 for towing our folding camper. There are lots out there, many of them being automatics. Are they as good for towing as a manual vehicle ?
Steve we have had our Toyota Surf for over 4 years now been down devon and cornwall 4 years running all over yorkshire and parts of lincolinshire, we both love the auto so easy to use so easy to tow with. the OH was a bit woried as she had never drivenan Auto before but now likes it better than the manual

Auto every time for me. 15 years driving a manual, 30 minutes in an auto and I forget to change gear getting back in a manual. You either love them or hate them. I prefer bigger cars and they generally have auto boxes. Rather surprised you are looking at 4x4 autos, though as it seems to negate the purpose of having the 4x4 somewhat. If you are driving up mountains, surely you want full control over the gearbox. Go for a 3 litre plus Mercedes E class with an auto box. It'll pull your house down and has a ride like a limousine.
We have had only autos since 1972. Would never have a manual now. Autos are so relaxing, and ideal for towing. Most autos offer a good deal of control as you can go into lower gears if you select them. Ours all had Drive plus 2 and 1.
But an auto box with a turbo diesel engine will often feel very sluggish pulling away as you cant ride the clutch the same way you would in a manual to keep the turbo spinning. Autos will sometimes require lots of extra cooling for the transmission fluid
I have a 2.5TD manual discovery and a 3,9 auto rangerover, and although on the motorway where its constant speed there is nothing in it for comfort, as soon as it gets into town or on back roads the the manual box can be quite bothersome to maintain a good pace, and in stop start city traffic I really suffer as a result of previous knee injury.
hi we have the santa f'e 2.7 auto V6 and its fantastic pulls with no effort and no gear changes to tire you, claimed i would never buy one and now would not go back to manual.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
Our son has a VW Passat TDI. as his towcar. He has just returned from Cornwall, and got trapped in the Indian Queens congestion, resulting in a smoking clutch. This would not happen with an automatic gearbox. We know several people who have changed to automatics, and are quite pleased with their performance.
Automatics tend to be slightly more thirsty. Other than that, it is simply a matter of personal choice.
Yes another auto man. Not driven anything but autos since I went to the USA in 1971 and 'discovered' them.
The only consideration when towing is ATF (Automatic Transmissoin Fluid) temperature. Even then, these days you do not seem to need to take any special precautions. However, just as well to check with the local dealer for your particular vehicle as to whether a ATF cooler is recommended for your combination.
