I had a 2001 zafira 2.0dti and it was a good towcar but you have to be aware that the manufacturers maximum tow is only 1050kg. What weight is the sunbeam?

Our VW Touran 1.9 TDI has a max. trailer weight of 1500 kg.   We tow a caravan with a MTPLM of 1430 kg., and it is usually laden to its limit.

The Touran tows it effortlessly.  We have just returned from Cornwall, much of the journey in appalling weather conditions.  At the end of a 300 mile journey, the onboard computer showed a fuel consumption of just over 37 mpg.

Can't complain about that!

Bertie.

Not bad Bertie...I did the exact trip you did in same rotten conditions, and returned 31 mpg with my 130bhp Passat 1.9TDI, although I think my clutch had other ideas...got stuck for an hour on A30 at Indian Queens, inching up a gradient even with 1100kg stuck at the back (mine can tow max of 1600kg), plus the gravity of the gradient, my clutch decided to take up smoking..and in a public place!  Anyone out there have the same trouble?  it's only covered 48k!!!

The max weight of 1050 on the Zafira is based on all 7 seats being occupied, the actual max towing weight with 4 adults on board is 1500kg

The Zafira 2.0 DTi has a very low towing capacity compaired to the 1.8 petrol sounds silly I know but I have been lead to believe it has something to do with the engine cooling. I nearly bought one a few years ago but because of this I opt for the Vectra 2.0 DTi which has a KERB weight of 1420kg giving an 85% figure of 1207kg and my van has a MTPLM of 1100kg so I`m towing at 77% and have good handling and good fuel consumption.

The Zafira dti has the same engine and cooling system as the equivlent vectra and as previously said the figure quoted is for all 7 seats occupied!

Kerb weights are not with seats occupied, also the Zafira cooling systen is definatley not the same as the Vectra, I have replaced and repaired many front ends of both vehicles in my line of work (49 years a panel beater)from slight dameged front ends to major damaged front ends requiring jigging and full front end panels.

What?  That's good!

1.8TDi Zafira I have - towing a 2 berth = average 29 mpg
