Sent you a TXT, I'm working late Friday and Saturday AM. Were away all next week so have a busy weekend, but if you want to come and have a look and a chat, give me a call on my mobile, or 686296 eves / weekend. Try to give me plenty of notice as I have to pick the caravan up at the weekend at some point as I need to give it a clean. BTW, We're in Trehafod and my name is Mark.
The split charging relay I have fitted on mine came from HERE. As you can see it is easy to fit, the labels on the new one make it clear which terminal is which, it also came with instructions. The reversing light is also wired through the grey socket, but since your caravan doesn't have one you need not worry about that. Wireing through the black socket is really not an option, especially given the cost of doing it properly is under £20 from towsure, (Probably a good deal more from Halfords though)
The grey cable, socket and bracket are HERE
One thing I would recommend to anybody fitting their own sockets to do, or even get the dealer to do is:
Pack the rear of your sockets solid with petroleum jelly or waterproof grease. This will help keep away most or all of the oxidisation on the inner screws and terminals + that which has the habbit of travelling up the wires and corroding their cores. Water will always get in and although usually drains away, some will always seem to stay.
I would also after each trip just spray the insides of both sockets and your plugs with WD40 or similar to again help prevent same. You will be surprised at just how much this increases longevity between electrical faults/bad connections etc.
Im new to all this but I've just fitted a genuine ford tow bar electrical kit(Ford P/No 1075447) to my ford focus and the new Hazard switch has 9 connection and the old one had 3. I am told there is an adaptor but no one knows the Ford Finis code for it.
Has anyone else had this problem or do there know what the part no is???
Hello, I apologise for popping up in this thread but having read it from top to bottom I am still not sure of my ground. I want to fit a towbar on my 02 Ford Focus Zetech Hatch 1.8 and have identified a kit (Towtrust) and single electrics for a reasonable price. However, I am unsure as to whether I need to fit a relay, I am only intending using it for towng a medium sized trailor. I think not, but would appreciate confirmation of this and also if Towtrust is a reasonable make (if one is allowed to quote "preferences" on this forum).
The one piece of advice I would give to anyone thinking of fitting a towbar themselves would be to check out what wiring set ups are available from your towcar manufacturer, rather than going straight to aftermarket.
The reason is that many cars today are built with a trailer socket for road lights. A small section of wiring harness may need to be purchased, to connect to the 13 pin socket, often with a trailer module from the carmaker. These modules do some useful things, such as when selecting reverse with the van attached, any rear park distance control beepers are turned off; the reverse lights are turned off to avoid glare at night; the cars fog lights similarly get turned off again to avoid glare from the front of the van; no bulb failure warning lights. And of course none of those wretched scotchlok connectors so beloved of fitters.
Since cars have come with ECU fitted I have bought dedicated looms from main agent.
they are not as cheap as some copies you can buy but a lot easier to wire.
You just expose the original loom and put new alongside and change one wire at a time until new is fitted replace old in package of new until such times you sell car and reverse fit.
The new comes with correct spade or barrel conectors fitted to correct wires, no cutting or scotch connectors required most cars donot need drilling as there is usually aplug in spare well to remove for cablle to socket/s even relays for indicators and lights which inform E CU van is on back or not.
