I have a 2002 auto V70. Does it need extra cooling for towing?

Take a look at the forum's here http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/forums.shtml . There is a towing section and also one dedicated to the V70 so if you post the same question on there i'm sure someone will help you out .

We have a 940, it never needed extra cooling.

I used to own an 850 t5 auto and that needed an extra oil cooler regardless of what any owners club or in fact the caravan club said. When you have heard the coolant start to bubble you know it's needed!

I have an 02 V70 which I used to tow a caravan with and I never had any problems so I would say no unless you are over the stated towing limit.

The problem is that different organisations reccomend oil coolers depending on their interest!

I have had many dealings with Kenlowe, and they almost allways say you should have one.

Last year I was towing with a merc E300 td auto. That is a 3 litre Turbodiesel! Mercedes say you don't need one, the Caravan Club say you don't need one, but Kenlowe advised having one fitted. Then when you ask"Where do I fit it", knowing full well there is not a spare inch of space under the hood, they say "Oh we don't know?"

That car needed an oil cooler fitted! There was nowhere to fit it, so the car got sold!

Anyone want to buy a Kenlowe oil cooler, + pipes, suitable for most cars, previously fitted by me to a Volvo T5?

You could see it as an insurance policy.  Will be difficult to know if OK lg tm, but if the gearbox goes its a very expensive job.

probably depends on your approach to managing risk.

A friend of ours bought a new Volvo V70 automatic last year, and tows a caravan of approx. 1200 kg MTPLM.  It does not have any special cooling facilities, and he has no problems.

His only gripe over the vehicle is that it has very poor lock on the steering, making extra manoeuvring necessary it tight places.

Bertie.

I've towed with a Volvo V70 estate and it was a nightmare.  The car is very long so that makes the overall length of the rig long so maneouvering is difficult - made much more difficult by the car's large turning circle.

The clutch overheated when reversing up a gentle slope.  And finally the car ground to a halt when towing uphill on loose ground cos the front wheels continuously spun.  The car has a tendency to spin its front wheels anyway and with the weight on the towhitch and the weight transfer backwards when pointing uphill - then we went nowhere fast! Had to unload everything onto the grass verge.

Oh dear!   We are finding our XC90 very good so far, the extra power over our 940 is very evident.  The 940 is rear wheel drive so has a very good turning circle compared to today's Volvos.

Every second van in Sweden seems to be towed by a Volvo, the majority V70s.
