i have a shogun 2.6 petrol uk modle the tax was 180 this year and the price goes up in 2010 to 205 so unless they change the law again thats what the tax will be for larger engines as of 2010 i allso have a 1.9 td golf and the tax for that 1 will allso be 205 as of 2010 the person who bought the 2001 vitara your tax will allso be 205 as of 2010 up untill then its 180
The cut off date is 1st March 2001 Shaundrw so the Vitara you mention above will only fall into the pre 2001 category if it was registered before 1st March 2001. Otherwise it will come under the post 1st March 2001 rules. OH's Almera falls outside it by just 10 days, grrrr.
Mine is a 1998 Nissan Elgrand 3.2 turbo diesel automatic 4x4 63k miles on the clock £185.00 road tax per year. Imported yes, model report didn't include emissions, no emissions value on my V5 document so no change for me.
However they have tightened up the rules from date of first registration of car and changed it to date of first registered in the UK, so if you are importing a car, beware if the model is 1998 and first registered in the UK on todays date for example, you will fall foul of the new new road tax rules. In the DVLA's eyes first registration will be 2009 and not 1998 so therefore ripping new imports off.
If the manufacturer dosent quote Co2 emmissions for the car it cant be taxed on that basis. Co2 emmissions werent quoted on vehicles built before 2001 so a '98 import will have to be taxed at £185. Co2 emmissions cannot be quote retrospectively for an old vehicle, it has to be done at the design stage.

That said, my Elgrand is an August 98 model, if it had been any later than October 98 the model report included emissions and I would be paying the higher band.

AFAIK It doesn't matter whether the CO2 figures are available or not - if the car was FIRST REGISTERED before April 2001 then you do not pay the VED based on emissions.
As a result, my 4.6 Range Rover costs my £185 a year!
