What engine does your Rover have and how much does the caravan weigh? To properly check that it is a good and safe match you need to know the kerbweight, towing weight and train weight for the car and the MTPLM (maximum allowable loaded weight) of the caravan.

If you can't see the light at the end of the tunnel, just keep going till you go round the bend.

Bad News

Not the best match in the world !

See Below:

Rover and Sterling

The towing capability for the Rover 216 Si -
with a Sterling Eccles Topaz:

Your Sterling is 370 kg too heavy for this car!!!!
24

Performance on levelled roads
Top speed
Usability 5th gear
Acceleration and take over
Performance in mountainous regions
Drive off uphill
Driving on motorway slopes
Driving on steep roads

Rover 216 Si - (82 kW/110 bhp)
Date of manufacture: march 1990 - december 1999

According to our data (in the Netherlands) this Sterling is 370 kg too heavy for the Rover. Please check the maximum towing limit in your own country.

137%

1370 kg     1000 kg

The caravan is too heavy for safe towing in accordance with a mix of European standards. However, according to the British Towing Code the percentage (loaded caravan / kerbweight tow car) is 137%.

The towing performances of this Rover with your Sterling are satisfactory (performance index = 89 km/h or 55 mph).

You may expect just moderate performances from this outfit. On flat roads you can come along provided you've selected the right gear, in which case top gear is applicable under normal circumstances.

On motorway inclines you will be able to come along quite nicely. On most steep roads you have sufficient power to keep going. On hill starts you may be will have all sorts of problems to get going.

Hi Alkodude, have a look here (copy and paste the address)http://www.cuddles.abelgratis.net/rover.htm, you can look to see the weight of your car and then look here, http://www.cuddles.abelgratis.net/vandata.htm to see the weight of your van, after having a look, it seems your van weighs 1200 Kgs all up and the car 1040 Kgs, 85% of that for a safe tow 884 Kgs, it does seem you need something with more weight to tow safely, but work it out for yourself.
