We have recently bought a caravan and tow with a 3L Omega Elite Estate manual. It's a heavy van (1500 MTPLM) but the car tows it well (I think, but we can't compare it with anything else). It does work hard going up hills, but maybe that's normal?? The only problem we have had was getting stuck in the wet ground with all the rain we've had recently (with and without the caravan) and that is where a 4WD would come in handy. Normal consumption for us (according to the onboard computer) averages at 30 - 32 MPG, towing it drops to about 20 - 22.
On the whole we are happy with the car for towing and intend keeping it for another 12 months at least.
I know ours is a different spec, but maybe this helps.
we towed our bailey champagne for 2 years with the 2 ltr 16v model, had no problems regarding weight ratios or space, the car pulled very well, averaging about 20--25 mpg------thought it a good towcar, -------till I bought a vw passat tdi !!
