I was wondering up to now we've only towed a couple of time with our Scenic. The caravan seems to bounce up & down when towing??? We've never had snaking & OH said it feels fine, but to me it seems to bob up & down. I followed him in another car just to check & even though its only slight i could still notice it. Is this normal???
We've checked weight of caravan & car weights & we are are less than 85% so not really sure why it does it.
I hope someone understands what i'm on about, i know i'm blonde but i'm not too thick
It does sound quite normal, the things I would check are tyre pressures, the load,ie have you got the correct nose weight and how much weight have you loaded into it or not as the case may be also snake bar depending on its age hope this helps a bit

do you have anything in your boot? sounds daft but my multi bounced even with the correct nose weight, stabiliser, i eventually found it to be better with more weight on the back wheels, ie the awning and food box. also check the rear tyre pressures
I sometimes get this effect if the van is not correctly balanced, moving a bike or two from the back to the front works wonders, but it can also be caused by the free surface effect of loose fluid. ie. water sloshing about. Do you drain all water out including the toilet flush water and check your noseweight before travelling? If not, try this and see if this makes a difference.
Also, the pressure imposed on water heater seals with the water sloshing about inside can burst the seal, and cost a fair bit to fix!
It seems like you need to follow a combination of the above comments, all of which could be relevant to the bouncing. I always adjust my tyre pressures to the maximumfor for a fully loaded vehicle - (car handbook). Then ensure your van tyres are at the correct pressure. Load your van so as to get the noseweight as near as possible to the vehicle maximum (car handbook again) but don't exceed it. Also, you must achieve this without excessive loading at the rear of the van.
After this, the performance of the outfit will depend upon the age and condition of the suspension assemblies of both vehicles.
I'll do a check on all of these things, i'll double check the tyre pressures on both caravan & car, i've just remembered brand new tyres were fitted the day before we got caravan & just assumed they'd be correct, so i'll check both while i'm doing it.
Hi Bertie, the van is a year 2000 & our car is just 3 years old, so to me both not that old.
Thanks for replies... i'm off to get my pen for a check list.
One further (cheapish) thing you can do is get the caravan wheels balanced by a local tyre fitter. This is not usually done and is not usually necessary but sometimes the wheels are so badly ballanced that it effects the feel of the outfit.

Those ages should rule out suspension problems then. Sounds like the need for small adjustments to several areas in the way you set up for towing, rather than anything being mechanically wrong.
We tow with a Scenic and have never had this problem. Van MTPLM is 1167Kg - we are at 79% of kerbweight.
First - in the Renault manual, it recommends that when the car is fully loaded and towing, all tyre pressures should be 39 psi. We stick to this religiously.
Also, we had spring assistors fitted (not expensive) which will help to stiffen the suspension a bit. We didn't tow before this at all, so I can't comment on how much difference (if any) they have made.
We also have noseweight set to exactly 75 Kg, and make sure all heavy stuff is over the van axle etc..
We also have an Al-ko 1300 stabiliser fitted.
I've been really impressed with how stable our outfit is - as solid as a rock at 70mph (legally in France).
Thanks Andy,
I'm going to check the tyre pressures. Is the alko 1300 you've got, a stabiliser & hitchlock together because i think thats what we've got.
I feel better now someone else tows with the scenic but just wondering what year your scenic is? i've only just thought if the tow bar could be too low so then it pulls the vans front down & lifts back end up???
Oh says it isn't & i'm just thinking too much
My Scenic is 05 (new design). The Renault standard fit towbar was very low - we got it changed for a Witter with Al-ko ball (needed for the extra stabiliser clearance).
yes - it's the stabiliser & hitchlock combined thing.
