Hi All,

I have a reliable, if dated, 1993 2.5TD Pajero. It drives fine but this time in france with outr new van, that has a 1500 max laden weight, 1260 minimum, it started to struggle with all the hills. Plus the kids soon will want to bring there bikes - and I will have them either on a aframe bike carrier (as mine ia a german van it fits all ok) or put the on a the rear of the van as fiamma do a carrier but not my first choice.

Anyway - I need to look at a replacement van. Not having the power availble when I am towing when I need it, is scarey, so alternatives:-

1, 2006 Nissan X-Trail. Like them, but I am concerned of the nose weight and pulling power  - thoughts?

2. Kia Sorento. Yep, like them, I dont think I will have an issue pulling my car or will I?

3. Get an equally old 2.8 Pajero. Try and find a low mileage one with say need some work inside and use my car as a donar as its not worth more than 2K - even though has 80K on the clock. I can then swap over the donar parts?

4. Landruiser. This would be a good choice but finding a newish one around 10-12K is hard to find

5. Hyundai Terracan. Dont seem to be popular BUT they they shuld be able to pull my van with ease.

5. SSANGYONG REXTON. Nice looks, merc gearbox and engine. Not seen many pull a van. May get higehr depreciated - thoughts?

6. Merc Vito. Part car, part van. Saw a load of these in France pulling vans and they have the space of a 4x4, and with a huge boot to store all kit inc bikes. ANyone here towed with one BUt I have been saved by having a a 4 wheel drive vehicel so thy is the downside for me?

Any advice appreciated. I must say I am looking at keeping this car a fair while, so also have to consider depreciated, parts costs etc.

Any advice appreciated?

Scott

Stop Kidding yourself with All that Rubbish Scott

Its got to be a 2.8 Paj

Or a 3.2 did Shogun mk3

You will regret it if you don't !!!

2.8 paj will pull yer house if you wanted to. For less than the price of the vehicles you quoted you could get a really good low mileage one.

Would stay away from Mercs though, not overly reliabe these days.
Although i'm sure there will be plenty of Merc owners who would say differently.

I towed with a converted Transit for eight years. Lots of issues with towing with a commercial vehicle on Uk sites. Could get three adult bikes and luggage in easy but it was a lot bigger than a Vito.

We towed with a pajero before we bought a mondeo st 2.2. We found it was great a big size difference but done the trick. Our pajero was like that going up hills used to frighten me as well because i used to think we were going to stop on the hill but it always made it up eventually.  With the mondeo towed great and trust me travelling to the lake district and then scotland we went up some very scary roads we had to go down a gear but it went up the hills a treat hope this helps a little

You ever consider the Paj may have been faulty ?. I've towed all over the lakes and Scotland and have never come across a hill that i thought it was going to stop on

If you're happy with the Pajero, why spoil a good thing? and, as you say, lots of stuff will be interchangeable.

My Pajero towed our 1500 Kg caravan over a scottish mountain with no problems at all.

Perhaps your pajero needed servicing/tuning.

It has to be the 2.8 Pajero,  brilliant, the best towcar we've had.

No problems with hills very reliable and easy to work on if required.
