hi all,
sold my 4*4 now looking for a large people carrier -
the choices - diesel + i have a max of 7500 to spend. so an 03/04 reg
ford galaxy / vw sharan
renault espace
peugeot 807
citroen c8
the pugs and citroen come in a 2.2 version.
my van weights 1300 empty with a max weight of 1500.
we dont take a lot of stuff with us and as there is just the two of us and 2 small dogs we used to put stuff in both car and van so true weight of the caravan would have been 1400.
so has anyone towed with one of the above.
i sold my 4+4 because i didnt find it too comfortable on long journeys with my job hence i decided to get a people carrier.
previously i owned one of the last diesel vauxhall omegas and that was so comfortable but being back wheel drive it wasnt too practical in winter although i never got stuck.
any advice preferably impartial would be greatley appreciated
We tow a 1550kg caravan with the petrol C8 and have no problems on main roads but do experience front wheel spin on loose roads and grass. The diesel engine is heavier and that should improve front down force and hence grip. Very comfy car and it handles like a saloon when driving.
I tow with a 2.3 Galaxy Auto petrol, Not very good on petrol but it tows well and is very comfortable, I take 4 of the rear seats out when towing to make a lot of room for our two dogs and other bits and pieces. When I can afford it I will go for the TDI version as I think mpg will be a lot better. I tow a Coachman Amara 500/5 and hardly know that it is there. I thinkk that it is a cor worth looking at.
Its the star rating for safety of the car, becareful with renault as they impose towing weight restrictions on their cars which the sales man failed to mention when we bought the grand senic and found we couldn't tow a 4 berth caravan, when we put 4 passengers and the dog in it, we were well over the weight restriction and it wasn't even a heavy caravan.
Have you thought about a mitsubishi delica? they are fantastic cars - we have one, sooooo much space and comfort and tow very easily. check out the owners club at mdocuk.co.uk/forums. they have a caravanning section in the forum.

i have one of these and tow a coachman mirage no problem they are a people carrier body on 4wd shogun running gear a very under estimated motor
We sold our diesel 2.2 C8 because it was a pain in the neck! It was a great for towing ( when it didn't have a fault) and we have pulled on and off of very muddy fields without any problem. The reason we got rid was that the engine management light kept coming on sayng "anti pollution fault" when this happens it goes in to limp mode and you then end going along the motorway at 30mph which is not good!
We had it in the garage and they said there was a fault with the turbo pressure sensor, they changed it but the fault still happened so they changed another one and the fault still happened, you get the picture. Citroen head office and all the other dealers had no idea what the problem was so we lost the will to live and got rid.
It has happened to me 'engine fault', turbo will not cut in and you plod along. no2 son works in a garage and told me it was because I had missed a ser vice by a couple of hundred miles. A quick reflash from his computor and all was well again
One of those naughty tricks by the car trade to make you go and have some unnessesary work done. As no2 son serviced the truck at home it was not put on the car data record.
