Hi, I am looking for a tow car to tow my Lunar Solar 524.  After looking and looking and looking and speaking to someone at Towsafe its not that easy.  Apparently itsnot just about the weight, its to do with suspension, engine size, etc etc etc.  It costs 15.95 to get 5 matches from Towsafe and I honestly think its worth it.  I have been towing with an Octavia 1.9 SDi for 3 years and have just found out my outfit is illegal.  If I had been stopped I could have been fined a grand and had 3 points on my licence.  Only found out coz I bought a new van.  Also if I had had an accident my insurance would have not been worth the paper its written on so 15.95 is not a lot to invest.Anne

Inside one of the front doors there should be a sticker with 4 weights in kgs.

The top one is the GVW
The next one is the gross train weight (which you want)
The bottom two are the max axle loadings.

Anne you can get something similar Here

It is a Dutch site but does show UK recommended ratios.

If you look at the vin plate on the car it should give you at least 4 weights. The top one is usually the Max Gross weight of the car the second and third are the maximumum axle weights and the third is the maximum train weight, It is the last one that you want. If the car does not have a train weight on the plate then it is not type approved to tow with.
