We have a Skoda Superb which lives up to it's name. Might be struggling to get a 'basic' car as manufacturers also realise the more they put in to cars, the more there is to break down. As for costs, if a diesel does break down they can be more expensive for spares/repairs, but this should be more than offset by the massive mpg improvement.

diesel every time,they even seem quicker now as well as better torque and mpg.daughters just bought a 1.6 petrol Megane coupe and it seems flat as a fart compared to the mondy diesel as well as using twice the amount of fuel and costing more to tax and insure !!

Throwing in another option - how about a LPG converted car?

Running costs are half that of petrol, but I don't know how the pulling power is affected.  Maybe someone can throw some light on that?

Diesels are great our Kia Sorento pulls like a train. Used to have a Honda Civic diesel-they are very good.Superb economy.

Petrols are great if they are V8!!! Lovely noise but thirsty!!!!

If I could afford it I would have a range Rover TDV8-lovely sound good economy and will tow any caravan!
