I have never thought of buying a petrol car for towing was always told you get much better fuel consumption with a diesel also told the engines are much better in a diesel - is this rubbish. So whats the views. I do a high mileage each as well as towing I'm a community worker so drive about a lot. Also someone in another thread said that just leaves the Japanese offerings. Looked up a Honda Accord ... but they don;t seem to come in a diesel, is that correct. I just want a car that will tow my caravan. The less things to go wrong with it the better, I would prefer no climate control, onboard computer etc etc as I just feel its more problems but can't seem to get away from this. Anne
As said by Teloz, diesels have much more low-down pulling power, and also mileage is better. Have a look round and see how many petrol buses, coaches and lorries there are...
In the old days, diesels did not have the acceleration and high speeds that so many want, and the only "car" version around was the old black taxi cab (they needed good mileage but not speed!) and they went on forever; nowadays modern diesels are almost always turbos, so you now have the speed as well as the pulling power and mileage. Over the years I have towed with five petrol cars and now finally with an Octavia diesel - the improvement is incredible!

We have a Skoda Superb which lives up to it's name. Might be struggling to get a 'basic' car as manufacturers also realise the more they put in to cars, the more there is to break down. As for costs, if a diesel does break down they can be more expensive for spares/repairs, but this should be more than offset by the massive mpg improvement.
OH used to tow our previous tt with a petrol Escort, then changed to a diesel Fiesta and the difference was incredible, both towing-wise and economy-wise. He has said several times since that he would never have another petrol car. Last year we got a Toyota TownAce, which we adapted for our camping needs, and even though the engine is bigger than the Fiesta it seems to be even more economical. So it's diesel every time for us now.

diesel every time, they even seem quicker now as well as better torque and mpg.daughters just bought a 1.6 petrol Megane coupe and it seems flat as a fart compared to the mondy diesel as well as using twice the amount of fuel and costing more to tax and insure !!
whatever you decide on petrol or diesel .As long as you buy Japanese then the odds are in your favour of having a trouble free vehicle. I know someone will come on saying they have had this or that trouble. It still wont alter the fact that you will have a far better chance of having less problems.A Honda Accord comes at the top of the tree as far as build quality and reliability are concerned.I have one in mind as my next car.
