I have just fitted a towbar to our 2003 VW Passat and have wired the 12N socket with no probs.

I am having problems with the split-charge relay in the 12S circuit, basicaly it is not switching power to the two switched outputs. I had this relay working on our last car but for some reason it is not switching properly now.

The only differnce is that instead of taking the power directly from the battery I have used the power and ground connnections fronm the 12v accesory socket in the boot. There is power to the relay and it increases when the engine is started but the relay is not switching????

Do I need to run a connection from the battery? Can I just by-pass the relay and have the wires on the constant live feed instead of being switched?

Any help would be appreciated!

whatever else is the problem will your boot accessory socket supply enough amps to run the fridge? if you have a constant live feed the power will still go to the fridge when you park with caravan hitched up-so you would have to pull out the 12s plug or flatten your battery quickly.

take live feed from battery thro relay as this is a lot safer.

dont forget to instal fuseholder and 15amp fuse as close to battery as possible.

then you should have no probs.

have you still got the instructions for your 12s installation,if so just install 12s as that to the letter.

Thanx for the info guys.

I will try and run a cable from the battery to the boot and fuse it. Don't suppose anyone knows how to get a wire from the engine bay on a 2003 VW Passat into the interior of the car??

Look for a place where the wiring harness goes through the bulkhead, then put a bit of soap or similar lubricant (not oil!) and feed the wire through the rubber grommet alongside the wiring. I have always done it that way (never owned a VW) but it has always worked. It can be a bit of a fiddle.

When you route it through to the back make sure it is'nt kinked or is placed where it can be damaged in any way! Don't want any nasty short circuits!

You should be able to run it underneath the car & cable clip it--
