Not srictly a towing topic.

Has anyone ever managed to achieve the manfacturers fuel figures on a regular basis. I did manage once on a 250 mile motorway trip in heavy traffic but it kept moving at about 50 mph the whole way.

Im now 57 and have driven many cars and now live in an area of no traffic jams and a 10 mile journy to work takes me 15 mins. I think I am light footed and rairly in a huury jet Ive never achieved their figures

Has anyone else?

I am not sure any of the cars I have owned have ever come that close on a regular basis although to be fair some were better than others. Mind you the way they arrive at the manufacturers figures in no way represent normal driving, its all done on a rolling road with various gears run at certain speeds over quite a short period of time. Kia owners always seem disappointed in their economy particularly from their 4X4 ranges.

What an interesting question!!  

Until recently, I had a LWB 2000 Isuzu Trooper Citation 3.0D.  I had it for 7 years and did over 100,000 miles in it.  I checked the fuel consumption just about every tankful - so I should be able to answer your question.  Unfortunately, I don't think I can.

The official figures for the Trooper are:

Urban -                     20.8 mpg
Extra-urban -             32.5 mpg
Combined -               26.9 mpg

Driving the car solo I always did better than 20.8 mpg. In fact, I did better than that towing a Lunar Saturn up the motorway, but I guess that is extra-urban, so doesn't count.   I achieved a figure as high as 32.5mpg only a few times - and that was footling around on holiday in Scotland.   On a normal week (whatever one of those is), I averaged somewhere between 25mpg and 26mpg.  If I also factor into the equation the fact that the Trooper's odometer read 7% high (i.e. told me I was doing more miles than I really was), I doubt that I did really achieve any of the manufacturer's figues, despite the fact that I generally have a very light right foot.

I've had a 2005 Nissan Patrol 3.0Di SVE for a couple of months and haven't really got a serious handle on its fuel consumption.  One real difference I need to bear in mind is that the odometer (and the speedo) are absolutely spot on.

The official figures for the Nissan are:

Urban -                     19.8 mpg
Extra-urban -             32.1 mpg
Combined -               26.2 mpg

i.e. a touch worse than the Trooper's - but not significantly worse.  I've had one tankful that included a longish trip (maybe two thirds of the mileage between refills) and got just over 27mpg.   At every other refill so far, I've calculated a figure of 23.5 mpg.  (If you multiple that by 1.07, it comes to just about what the Trooper's consumption said its consumption was when it lied to me).

It's possible that I might achieve the Patrol's quoted extra-urban figure - but it'll be next summer before I discover whether I actually do.  I'd be very surprised if I get close to the combined figure on a regular basis - but I probably don't do enough out of town mileage in a normal week to do that.

So, do I get close to the official figures?  I'm da***d if I know.

I do obtain the Toyota Combined mpg of 31.4 on a daily basis I get 31mpg - towing 25/26 Toyota Urban 24.4mpg - Toyota Extra Urban is 37.7mpg. Down here we have no motorways and the A30 is usually slow moving, even in winter.

My car is a Toyota LC3 [Landcruiser Colorado] D-4D 5 speed auto. [permanent 4 wheel drive]. So I am quite happy with my mpg and the car is a joy to drive.

Slow moving is fine.  It's stop/start town driving (and the A30 in July & August IIIRC) that eats diesel.

We get slightly less than the mfrs figure for our Toyota Corolla 1.6. About 34mpg.
Our second car, a Rover 25 TDi on the other hand drinks fuel if you drive hard, but on a recent trip up to Wrexham it did over 60mpg...!!!

I have a toyota avensis 2.0 D4-D The best i have had is 62mpg. about 95% of this was on motorways at about 60 to 65mph. I know i was not going fast but it shows what you can get out of them. I get 40+ all day long without going on motorways. + In a independent mpg test with loads of car manufacturers. toyota were the only one that did more mpg then there official figures. Can we hear from some petrol heads.

My Rav4 2.2 D4-D is two weeks old and last week managed 52.3mpg on a 450 mile round trip on motorways/dual carriageways. The toyota figure is 42.8 combined so beat that easily. I always manage more than manufacturers figures. I change up quickly (dont let the car over rev) and travel at about 70 on the motorway. Anymore than 70 and the mpg starts to suffer. Even just tootling around I'll beat the combined figure easily enough and with the price of diesel I make sure I do!!

Coming back from Shropshire (155 miles) towing the caravan, I was forced, through torrential rain, to travel at 40mph. 

I did the journey on a quarter of a tank instead of the usual half a tank.

Well pleased.

I have a 3.2D I D Pajero and regularly check my fuel consumption and its usually close or slightly better than the official figures dependant which boots I'm wearing at the time

Actually much to my surprise, I have achieved the mpg figures for my Kia Sedona. If my memory serves me right they said 38mpg and, if I drive sensible on a run, thats what I get. Shove the old curryvan on the back with half the house in it and I get 25.

My VW averages 26-28 solo and 22-25 towing  my 1800kg caravan.

I don't know what the official figures are for my van but I can''t see them being an awful lot better for a 200bhp engine.

I consider this to be pretty good for a 2.8l v6 petrol with a mgw (solo) of 2515kg and a gtw of 4500kg.

Solo, the van is usally empty so weighs about 2 ton all told, but when towing, I have all my gear with me so is quite near the maximum.

I don't usually worry too much about fuel consumption. If I did, I wouldn't have bought a 2.8l petrol van.
