We have an MPV (VW Touran) I think that the only time I have been at a disadvantage by only having front-wheel-drive is on wet grass. However, having a mover fitted to the van makes it possible to avoid this situation by having the car on firm ground, and moving the van to the car.
The cost of running the Touran is far cheaper than any 4x4, and the cost of an MPV plus mover is also less than the cost of a 4x4.
In addition, an MPV is usually better on CO2 emissions than a 4x4, so is less likely to fall foul of any future legislation such as low-emission-zones. The recently introduced London LEZ, along with the totally unsympathetic attitude towards motorhome owners already living inside the zone, should be enough warning to be very careful in making your decision.
Bertie.
