We thought we were set on getting a new CRV, then we saw the New VW Tiguan.
It's slightly lighter than the CRV though.

Anyone else got any thoughts or comments on the VW?  I'm test driving one on Saturday

The Honda would get my vote on reliability, second to none IMHO.  VW are not scoring as well as they used to in various surveys.

Don't believe the VW literature. True kerbweights are usually considerably higher than what VW quote. If you get a chance on Saturday, try and put it on a public weighbridge if there's one near you, and I reckon you will be surprised.

Practical Caravan did a write-up on the Tiguan in the December 2007 edition, and gave it quite a good report.

I would be particularly interested to hear how you get on on Saturday, as I have been considering changing to either a Tiguan or CR-V myself.

I would lean towards the CRV, as it has been about a little bit longer, and the likelihood is that most of the new model teething troubles will have been ironed out.

The CRV also seems to have a few more toys as standard, obviously depending on the model.

But let's face it, either of them would be fantastic.

Steve.

Thanks all - I'll post my test drive results on Saturday.

I must admit the VW would have to be excellent for me to buy it and take a chance on the new car niggles.

I don't think VW have announced the hitch load limit on the Tiguan yet.

Can,t comment on the VW but I have a new CRV. Max towing weight 2 Tonnes and a max towball weight of 100KG ample for most people.

The 'traler stability assist' pulled me out of a potential snake last week.

Plenty of room, economical, probablt lower road tax £160 and plenty of 'toys'

Can't fault it

I must admit I would have a CRV, but unfortunately my company won't let us have 4x4's.

Well I had a test drive and a good look at the VW Tiguan today and now I don't know what to do.

The Tiguan is a very very good drive.  I drove the sports diesel with the firmer suspension and sports

seats. No roll around corners and is extremely car-like to drive.  The engine is very quiet, I had to ask

whether it was actually a diesel I was driving.

It's not as big as a Honda and the interior has a solid, well made feel with all controls close to hand.

One minor niggle was the center arm rest was in the way a touch when operating the electronic handbrake.

It's not a car for a big family but for 2 of us it ticks all the boxes in that it is easy to park, easy to

drive and can tow our current caravan with some room to pull a heavier van in the future.

If I were to ignore costs and just decide on practicality then the Tiguan would win hands down for me.

However when you weigh up the overall costs the Honda CRV seems to have the edge.  The Tiguan is cheaper to

buy from the showroom, as long as you don't have the leather seats and too many optional extras, but the

Honda looks like it will be cheaper to run over the long term.

I've put some figures together to try and explain the comparison.

VW TIGUAN v HONDA CRV

How exciting for you!  I reckon once you have test driven them both one will leap out at you as the obvious choice.

Good luck choosing.

I've just realised I made a boo boo

I should have chosen the Honda ES with optional Advanced Navigation Pack, In which case the Honda becomes the cheaper to buy from the showroom.

Sorry

Purely on cost and running costs I think the Honda will win (pending test drive), but the Tiguan is a very very nice alternative

Many thanks for the feed-back Knightwarrior. I think the CR-V ES also has Multi Function Steering Wheel, Cruise Control, and folding mirrors as standard too.

(It looks as though Honda's OTR price, according to their brochure, includes Delivery, Plates, First Reg Fee and 12mths. road tax/Vehicle Excise Duty)

Yes the ES does have those things and also includes a full tank of fuel I believe.

Apparently Honda have some deals on some models but not on the EX model.  I'll find out more next weekend.
