All winter tyres have a better 'wet grass grip' than all normal summer tyres. Wet grass characteristics are very similar to those found under snow....ie..... ice!

Can you please provide some reference/evidence that winter or "all season" tyres will significantly improve a 2wd car's ability to tow a caravan off a wet/muddy/boggy field?

Cheers
Andrew

There won't be any; this is not a design or test requirement of any of the product.

Winter tyres are called that as they have a modified internal structure to produce a lower glass transition phase allowing them to grip metalled surfaces well below 7DegC [the normal 'summer' tyres Tg] winter tyres may not have any snow performance whatsoever as already noted the tread cut is different with snow tyres.

Snow chains if used with care could be an option but if you use them don't be a muppet and chew up the ground for everyone else; the most important thing is to load the outfit well and ensure you get plenty of grip over the drive wheels.

sipes are used for road noise (pitch markers)

all weather tyres are exactly what they are, tyres with low noise and asymetrical pattern to reduce spray.

winter tyres are either reinforced of harder 'd' compound.

you cant get a low profile tyre (60 down to 35 profile) to perform on grass it just wont happen.

and remember 'the thicker the tyre the less grip off road you have.

all terrain tyres or mud pluggers have no sipes at all and are as noisy as hell on the road (my range rover drones like a wheel bearing has gone)

but rest assured i could tow my van and your car and van off site with no probs in 2 foot of mud.

If you've got Simex's or Insa Turbo Special Tracks or similar on it, it'll howl like a banshee on tarmac.

Not all offroad tyres are noisy.  BFG All Terrains are only a little noisier than road tyres on the Trooper I had until recently - and grip well enough away from the black stuff, apart from in deep mud.  A friend has some Kuhmo MTs on a Patrol and he reckons they're pretty quiet too.

It's not true that all terrain tyres are not siped.

Have a look at the two most popular and capable of the all terrains .... they are both highly siped .....
