hello.we have been pulling a herald clarion 420/2 with a zafera 1.6 and am wanting to put a tow bar on my 56 plate saab 93 convertable.I think the extra power and weight of the saab might be better for towing but any advice and tips would be welcome. We are hoping to travel right down to nice in the south of france and again any tips or advice would be welcome (done it before a couple of times but without a caravan)

My boss blue up 3 engines in his 93 convertible. Very quick car though and he was always one to push it hard.

Can't see any reason why it would be a problem, I have seen a few 93 saab hatchbacks towing, I have seen a few times a convertible one towing also, very nice for driving round the south of france in, soooo jealous

In theory at leas it should be a good towcar, my concern would be that if the engines are as fragile as my boss seems to make them, would the extra strain of towing be an engine breaker?

We have owned a Saab 99, 900i 900turbo, 900i and 9000turbo, all were very good towcars, being heavy and powerful, especially the turbos! Our 9000 T (200bhp) went like a rocket! Cracking mid range punch for towing!!!

I would think your 93 would be a very good tug-brilliant in the South of France!

These were the preGM versions, engines were tough as old boots and seemed to cope with huge mileages if serviced regularly. Turbos needed frequent oil changesand synthetic .They should also be allowed to idle for a few seconds if they have been running in boost, before shutting down, also not given max wellie until warm!

We have'nt owned any of the current generation Saabs but would like a 93 cabriolet!

Our local GM dealer now sells SAAB, having had  Vauxhalls, not sure if I would use them! There is an independent nearby (was the Saab dealer pre GM takeover)

Hi,

The last convertable I owned was an MG Midget (twenty five years ago!) but I would be interested in what happens to the aerodynamics when towing and whether you will get any adverse buffeting and pressure changes.

I don't think it will suck your ear drums out but I bet you will much prefer to keep to a more sedate pace, as befits such an grand tour.

Sounds a great plan,

Mr U-M

I have a SAAB 900 Convertible too, never thought of using it for towing.

The Beemer is for towing, SAAB for posing.
